I would like to think my blog is a business and not a hobby with all the time I put into it and the primary reason I started it was to make money. My blog is a recipe blog, how would I know if the IRS sees this as a hobby or a business? Also, since it is a recipe blog, and I photograph all my recipes, I was hoping to claim the food I purchase as an expense. It can get pretty costly and not everything that gets cooked is always eaten since I have to experiment a lot. Your advise is greatly appreciated, I read your great article on Pro Blogger.

I certainly fall under the hobby use making about $300-$400 a year - not a lot but it pays for my hosting. i've been wondering about the cost of my internet access though - it's obviously essential to run my blog but I do use it for personal use (as well as for my real job) so I was wondering if that bill can be claimed. Not sure how I (or the IRS) can calculate the proportion of my net usage. Would 50/50 work?
