Ask the taxgirl: Extending/Amending Returns and Rebates

by Kelly on April 29th, 2008

Taxpayer asks:
Hello,

I have a daughter born 3/3/06. There has been a delay in her birth cert. due to name change which also means I have not been able to acquire a ss# for her.

I am going to do an amendment for the past 2 tax years once I receive the proper documents (birth cert, then ss#). My question is am I able to still receive the $300 on the extra rebate for her? If so what is my time frame?

Thank you,

Taxgirl says:

Your dependent must have a valid Social Security number to be claimed a dependent on your federal income tax return, rebate or no rebate. So clearly, you haven’t been able to claim your daughter thus far. For more information about taxpayers who are ineligible for a rebate, see my prior post.

While you can amend your tax returns, your options for amending (or extending) and qualifying for the rebate are limited. To date, the IRS has imposed deadlines for extensions and qualifying for rebates - for the most part, you must file by the end of the year. See my prior post for more information about extensions.

Like any good lawyer, I need to add a disclaimer: Unfortunately, it is impossible to give comprehensive tax advice over the internet, no matter how well researched or written. Before relying on any information given on this site, contact a tax professional to discuss your particular situation.

He should have to repay me for his half. How do I get his half back that i paid for him. He does not work or file a income tax. i am a nurse and i do. can i file some kinds of papers about spouse to the IRS to get my half paid back to me.
