Can Williams get a tax break for her tirade?

Following on the heels of my Belichik post last year… can Serena Williams properly deduct her record fine for bad behavior?

FYI, your photo is Venus, not Serena

Kelly,

Good post and an interesting question. However, I would have thought that Serena, other than her endorsement contracts, would be an IC regarding tennis income proper. Those prizes are awarded by the WTA. Is she an employee of them?

I was asked a similar question over in the comments at WalletPop. I assumed (perhaps erroneously) that most of her prize money and endorsements are run through a closely-held company. She wouldn’t be an employee of the WTA but she could be an employee of “Serena Williams Enterprises” or some such. I don’t know this for sure but I would be extremely surprised to see her report it all on a Schedule C…

Thanks Michael, duly noted and fixed!
