DC Residents Get an Inauguration Tax Break

January 20, 2009 · 0 comments

DC residents may have had to put up with lost tourists crowding the Metro during the Inauguration but they do get a little bit of a break. The District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) had previously announced that sales tax on property rentals during Inauguration festivities would be suspended. This applies to the one-time rental of houses, English basements, condominiums, apartments and the like – I’ve even heard of one guy renting out his bathtub!

For short term rentals (meaning fewer than 90 days), DC usually imposes a 14.5% tax on gross receipts. Not so for the Inauguration. Tax free rentals.

If you live in DC and have questions, you can give OTR a call at (202) 727-4TAX (4829).
