When I worked at a convenience store in OH - which could sell wine - the ID checking practices were lax to say the least. That makes me think there may be something to the ID argument (although, IMHO, it augurs against prohibiting grocery store sales.)

The argument used around here has to do with keeping the questionable characters from frequenting the stores. They don't want homeless alkies buying up all the two-buck Chuck with the two dollars they got to go buy some milk or bread. The laws altruistic intent is rendered useless by the business end of the gun-barrel of logic.

All these laws are protectionist and never hold up to logical scrutiny. Our country could use a lot more libertarian thought on these issues. Why are Americans so afraid of freedom? We seem to fight it at every turn, regardless of how faulty our logic may be. It has to be humans natural instinct to control everything and everyone. Take a chance like our founding fathers did and give people their freedom and then force them to take responsibility for themselves if they fail.

What about the most idiotic laws of all--the Blue Laws we have here in Connecticut, where you can't buy liquor of any kind on Sundays? It's perfectly legal to buy as much alcohol as you want the rest of the week, and even drink yourself into oblivion, even on a Sunday. You just can't BUY the liquor on a Sunday. Of course, you can order alcoholic drinks in restaurants, etc., which only makes the whole thing more absurd.
