Great article, on the sin tax soda, I can just see everyone trying to drink water, and all the soda companies have to lay off people, guess the price of water will go up and the soda companies will start making a product that will not be considered a soda. It would be healther for us. Keep up the good work.

Well, if this is the only way we can get people to pay for their own freaking health care, then I'd almost settle for it. I can give up pop in a New York second.

Unfortunately, federal involvement will still end up further damaging the market with the mal-investments the government will continue to make, so it will end up costing us all dearly.

America was nice while it lasted.

Melissa,

Thanks re the tweets!

Under the initial proposal, most diet drinks would be exempt. It's really a "sugary drinks tax" but it has been nicknamed the "soda tax."

With respect to the economics, the argument is that any additional tax on food or beverages is regressive and affects the poor disproportionately. The claim is that if I have $1 and I pay 3 cents extra tax - and you have $10 and pay 3 cents extra tax - the "hit" on me is felt harder.
