On TAP

So you think you could do a better job than the IRS?  Here’s your chance!

The IRS is now accepting applications for the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (TAP). The Panel allows everyday folks like you and me to help make decisions that will make the IRS run a little more smoothly. Specifically, TAP members identify and prioritize taxpayer issues and report to the Treasury, IRS and National Taxpayer Advocate.

To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen and – this is the tricky part – be able to commit 300 to 500 hours during the year to the Panel (that works out to 25-40 hours per month). In addition, you must be current with your tax filings and payments and pass a criminal background check.

This year TAP is accepting applications for residents of the following locations:

  • Alabama

  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • New Mexico
  • Nevada
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Puerto Rico
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

You can apply online from
March 19 through April 30, 2007. You can also call 1-888-912-1227 to request an application form.
