Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day is just a week away - April 24!

In honor of the day, the Business Channel is asking our readers to think about how our experiences as children influence our career choices. You only have a few more days to enter - the deadline is April 20.

Follow this link to post a comment about what you want to be when you grow up… At the end of the month, you may be entered to win a gift card to Barnes and Noble for $25.

You might have noticed that I was strangely silent for most of today… In fact, my normal taxgirl blogginess was replaced by a host of 404 errors, 403 errors and errors that I had never heard of before. We had some kind of hardware thing (yes, be very impressed by my technical knowledge) that brought down the network for most of the day. It was a long day.

We bloggers have reacted differently to the outages. There was screaming. Emails. More screaming. And reports of hair loss.

Liz wrote a great post soliciting song suggestions while we wait - check it out for some chuckles.

And my variation on the theme is “things to do when you can’t get your taxgirl.com fix” - for those of you who wait breathlessly for taxgirl.com’s new post each day (and heck, even for those of you who don’t), what did you do while you waited? In other words, what do you do when you’re bored?

The entry that makes me chuckle the hardest might win some taxgirl merch…

Gosh, we just announced our big winners for our channel wide contest and I thought we were done with contests and events for awhile (except for my super fabulous tax contest, announced next week). But oh no. October is chock full of ways to win and otherwise notable achievements all over the business channel. Check out:

Home Biz Notes is celebrating its one year blog-o-versary.
Pimp Your Work (which is just fun to say) is hosting a comment contest.
Similarly, Interview Chatter is also having a giveaway.
And The Golden Pencil is offering a teleclass on writing a book.

Much to see and do - make sure that you stop by and check it out!

And The Winner Is…

Aime Stewart, of Maryland, the owner and operator of Cutie Pies is our Grand Prize Winner! Cutie Pies is an individual single serving pie business. Her Cutie Pies are 4 inches in diameter and she bakes them in standard aluminum pot-pie containers. The idea is to provide an option for folks who love the idea of pie (c’mon, who doesn’t?) but don’t need an entire pie. Our judges thought that Aime’s idea was innovative, creative and well presented. Aime has the beginnings of a successful business: she has a great idea, a plan to make it happen, a team to help her out, milestones for progress and motivation. We think that the prizes and advice that she walks away with will help her reach her goal of getting Cutie Pies into retail outlets, including grocery stores, restaurants and coffee shops.

Our first runner up is Emilie Shoop, of Illinois. Emilie just launched Shoop Fitness on the web at www.shoopfitness.com. Emilie’s concept is a fitness website focusing on the needs of pregnant women and new moms. As the mother of three small children, I can certainly relate to Emilie’s demographic! Our judges felt that Emilie had an interesting concept and a potentially big audience. We thought that some extra press and some marketing advice would add value to Emilie’s already great idea.

Our second runner up is Aaron Emerson, of California. Aaron offers an online marketing service geared towards small businesses hoping to make a big impact. Our judges felt that Aaron had the potential through his experience and enthusiasm to make an impression in a crowded market.

Congratulations to all of our winners!

And again, we offer a huge THANK YOU to our sponsors! Please let them know that they are appreciated!

Opportunity is knocking.

Admit it. Every now and again, while perusing taxgirl.com, you think, “Boy that sounds like fun!”

No, not the tax part. I know most of you don’t think that sounds like fun (though I swear it is). The blogging part.

Well, here’s the deal: it is. But it’s also a lot of work. Fun work. It’s the best gig on earth (except maybe being JK Rowling - but hey, we can’t all write Harry Potter).

At any rate, part of my new gig as the Channel Editor for b5media’s Business Channel is launching new blogs. We’re about to expand the channel and I have some blogger openings. The competition is stiff - but if you think you have what it takes, dive on in. The water’s great!
