Survivor Reruns.

January 5, 2007 · 0 comments

Stretching his fifteen minutes even further, Richard Hatch of CBS’ "Survivor" went before a federal appeals court to argue against his conviction on tax evasion charges.  Hatch was convicted of failing to pay taxes when he took home the $1 million prize on "Survivor. He was sentenced to more than four years in prison.

Defense lawyer Michael Minns argued on appeal that U.S. District Judge Ernest Torres improperly prevented him from pursuing a line of questioning regarding Hatch’s allegations that CBS promised to the pay taxes on the prize (CBS has denied those allegations).  Federal prosecutors disagreed in their pleading, stating that Torres told Minns that he could present the evidence and that Minns chose not to do so.

While the "naked guy" (his "Survivor" tag) was acquitted on a number of charges relating to bank, mail and wire fraud charges related to his charity, Horizon Bound, he was convicted of tax evasion for more than $350,000 of income in additional to the $1 million prize.

And no, you don’t get to just leave when you decide that you’re done.

You and I may know that, but tell it to Richard Hatch.

You may recall that Hatch was charged with tax evasion last year.  He originally cut a deal with prosecutors and then took it back, choosing to argue a loopy defense instead.  He was found guilty and sentenced to more than four years in federal prison.

Now that he’s there?  Well, he doesn’t like it so much.  According to his lawyer, Michael Minns, Hatch wants to be moved from Oklahoma to a prison in Rhode Island or Florida.  Specifically, he wants to be moved to Rhode Island or Florida, reportedly to be near his family.

And I couldn’t pass on posting Minns’ comment.  Minns believes that Hatch “should be in a camp” noting “The camps are the most comfortable of the uncomfortable. They are still jails, but they get to see the sky and be outside. It’s bad for Richard, who is an outdoor person.”

Careful, the other inmates might start putting in their own requests for ocean views and the like…  This is jail, remember?
