Stephen-Yagman

Following his convictions for tax evasion and bankruptcy fraud in June 2007, former celebrated civil rights attorney Stephen Yagman was sentenced to three years in federal prison. He has yet to go to jail, although his sentence was scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

Yagman was scheduled to begin serving his sentence on January 15, 2008.
However, he successfully won an extension due to the death of his aunt in New York.

Now he’s trying again. Yagman has filed a petition before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals appealing his denial of bail. U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson had initially denied Yagman’s request to remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction.

Remember Stephen Yagman?

He was the “expert in civil rights legislation” (according to his own web site who was convicted of federal tax evasion, money laundering and bankruptcy fraud charges.

Yagman’s hearing for sentencing was earlier this week. He has asked the court to spare him jail time based on his health and the potential for personal harm during his sentence. Prosecutors are asking for at least nine years in prison.

Apparently UCLA is betting on things going Yagman’s way: if he avoids prison time, he has been asked to teach a course on “law, morality and social justice.” Interesting definition of morality for those Bruins, no?
