I like Mary Jo; thus hopefully I'm leaving this comment in the correct spot for her to win. I think personally that Casablanca is WAY overrated. But, I love the whole idea of taking movies and breaking them down tax wise -- super clever of you Kelly :)

Great movie. Re: the letters: The letters clearly are owned by the German govt., but it is an illegal govt. and cannot enforce its ownership rights. Therefore, after Ugarti is killed, Blaine becomes owner of the found property of the letters, with appropriate tax owed. When he then gives the letters to Lazlo, Lazlo becomes liable for gift tax for their receipt.

I can't believe you're making me think about taxes in connction with my all-time favorite movie!

Does Morocco/Casablanca levy liquor taxes for all those drinks raised at the conclusion of the singing of La Marseillaise?

Are Vichy Water bottles subject to deposit fees/recycling taxes?

What kind of payroll tax issues did Rick face as an employer?

I guess we'll always have Paris, I mean taxes!

And if Laszlo has tax liabiality for the letters, and doesn't claim them, can Ilsa be found to have both tax and criminal liability. If she knew about the letters, she can't be an "innocent spouse."

Jon -

Excellent catch, Jon!

That part was a little confusing because initially, they did discuss the sale of the cafe and Blaine turned him down. Later, he agrees. But the terms are unclear.
