Where’s My Rebate? The IRS Has (Some) Answers.

May 1, 2008 · 167 comments

Finally.

The IRS has a feature available on its web site where you can check the status of your rebate. Visit “Where’s My Stimulus Payment?” and have on hand your legal name, filing status, Social Security number and number of exemptions shown on your 2007 return. You must have filed your tax return at least six weeks prior in order to get an update.

If your information is not available (mine wasn’t), you’ll receive a message telling you to check the Payment Schedule.

Hopefully, this will put some of your questions to rest. I’d love to hear feedback from those of you who have used the site!

No information for me either; I’m in the May 9th group… I wonder if they’re turning on this information early enough to be helpful, or if it’s only for “my rebate should be here by now” questions…

2 Jungleswife May 1, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Didn’t work for me either. I tried my SS# and Jungle’s.

3 Erica May 1, 2008 at 4:40 pm

I just tried checking mine and they seemed to think I was making a mistake in entering my information. Perhaps it’s because they don’t have my updated filing status on record yet. Although when I tried again with “single” it still didn’t seem to know who I am.

4 Sean Kelly May 1, 2008 at 6:09 pm

I can’t wait for that rebate.

A whole tank of gas paid for!

5 Bettie May 1, 2008 at 6:52 pm

I tried it for me and my wife. It could not tell us about either of our rebates.

6 dee May 1, 2008 at 7:56 pm

The site worked for me. I should be receiving my money tomorrow. Woohoo!

7 Jay May 1, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Didn’t work for me either. The “you may have made a mistake” page seems to come back way too fast. Almost like it isn’t checking anything.

8 kesia May 1, 2008 at 11:38 pm

can the rebate be direct deposited into my h&r block emerald card?

9 Holly May 2, 2008 at 6:51 am

It worked for me and also answered my question
I won’t be getting mine yet they are mailing it. my original return was direct deposited and I did an amended for a mistake and got a check. So now my stimulus is going to be mailed how stupid.
If I would of known that was going to affect my stimulus I would of waited until after I got my stimulus to file the ameneded.

10 Jay May 2, 2008 at 8:42 am

Kesia, from what I have read, if anybody had their tax returns posted to any kind of ‘card’ issued by a tax preparer, those rebates would be by check, not direct deposit.

11 glen May 2, 2008 at 10:21 am

didnt work for me and i filled feb 5th and last two of ssn is 09

12 JoAnn May 2, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I just tried a few minutes ago and the site didn’t work for me either.

13 Debi May 2, 2008 at 2:48 pm

We are in the second group and I can’t find out a darn thing ..on the irs website or by calling the rebate hotline at 1-866-234-2942. We filed the end of Jan and had our refund direct deposted. I have read anywhere from May 5 until allow a few days after the 9th????????????????Confused

14 Sarah May 2, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Didnt work for me either, socail ends in 01.. Did anyone else ending in 01 not get it today?

15 Mary May 2, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Mine ends in 14 and I still haven’t rec’d anything, however 2 friends of mine, one 00 and the other 03 both rec’d theirs between today and yesterday…go figure

16 Christina May 2, 2008 at 3:05 pm

My husband’s social ends in 00 and we didn’t recieve ours today like we were supposed to. Anyone know who to contact? The site didn’t work for us either.

17 nkenge May 2, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Did not work for me either, social ends in 55!!!!!
Rats just expected the government to have their crap in order this time!!!!

18 Donna May 2, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Will not work for me either, my friends social ends in 20 hasn’t been deposited yet.

19 ts May 2, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Didn’t work for me either…I’m a ..17 (was supposed to be today) but the site simply states..”Sorry, we can’t give you any info at this time”

20 Debi May 2, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Lord this is just frustrating. I don’t mean to be greedy but we could use some gas and groceries! I can’t understand how it the first story I heard they would be one week early….which would have made ours today. Then I heard 4 days early…which would make it Monday. When irs tells you to see the schedule, cause they give me the mistake deal, then no info, the schedule still has me at the 9th….which is where it was all along…….poop!!!!!

21 MeganJ May 2, 2008 at 4:01 pm

The website didn’t work for me either…apparently there’s a mistake and it pulled this BS when I did it for my state tax return. Our social is ending in 01 and our friends got theirs today and they end in 10….any clue?

22 MercedMom May 2, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Didn’t work for me either. SSn ends in 19. Got the same “may have made a mistake” message and “No information”.

23 tina May 2, 2008 at 5:05 pm

my husbands is 29 and we have no clue. these seem to be just lies again!

24 cheryl May 2, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Site shows I made a mistake – my social ends in 08 and I filed 1/27. My coworker whos social ends in 12 got his on Apr 30

25 MeganJ May 2, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Gathered an 800 number which only acts as the same as the website. You enter your social, filing status and exemptions for it to tell you NOTHING!!! Try it out and see if it works for you…of course, I can’t track ANYBODY down to ask myself. 866-234-2942…it’s all AUTOMATED which drives me nuts!!

26 kesia May 2, 2008 at 7:37 pm

I tried that rebate number and it didn’t work for me. Thats crazy if we owed them money we wouldv’e had to pay them right away. but we have to wait for our payment.

27 faith May 2, 2008 at 8:01 pm

I work for a large bank and know that within our financial institution deposits made today will not reflect in customers accounts until tonight at midnight. So some of you should see your rebate tomorrow. Good luck!

28 rager May 2, 2008 at 10:19 pm

of course it didn’t work for me either, and I was due today as well.
The Govt can’t even deliver on this, please raise your hand if you still want them running your health care system!

29 steve May 3, 2008 at 7:11 am

people are you all that hard up to get a few $$$

you know theres always welfare.

30 Greg May 3, 2008 at 8:27 am

I got the message “you may have made a mistake” even though I entered the correct information (100 times). Even tried it with mydaughter’s information. I agree that this is another great government screw-up.

31 Pakou May 3, 2008 at 9:56 am

It didn’t work for me either, I know someone with the ss ending in 34 and got theirs on 25th. Sucks!

32 Brandi May 3, 2008 at 11:03 am

I filed mine in Feb. & the Soc. ends in 17, no deposit…Got the same you may have made a mistake message, and even this morning there is still no deposit so its not the bank holding it…

33 Jeremiah May 3, 2008 at 5:00 pm

There are apparently a lot of people whom did not get their check on time. I happen to be one of them. I have called the IRS and also spoke to my bank. What i got from the IRS is a number to call to see if your check is going to be offset. Basically what that means is if you have unpaid student loans, balances owed to the IRS and a few other types of debts, your check will go towards that balance. If you call the IRS you can also get this number. Also, if you go to irs.gov, you will eventually find a link to track your stimulus check. My social ends in 05 and i filed mine through turbotaxonline.com very early this year. According to the schedule, I should have gotten mine yesterday. I have yet to see this deposit. Using the tracker, I found mine is actually set to be deposited on May 9th. So try using the tracker from the IRS website, and call them for the offset number.

34 Jeremiah May 3, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Also, for you people who keep nagging on people that are “hard up for the cash”, the economy is horrible. Gas prices are skyrocketing along with groceries and a lot of people are already trying to recover from lay-offs and bills gone wild. Does not mean they need welfare. They just could really use the money the government is promising. Obviously you make enough money to where you don’t need to worry about it. How about you hand your check to someone else since you obviously don’t care about it? If not, then don’t complain about people that are upset that they don’t have money that they are promised when they are supposed to get it.

35 kesia May 3, 2008 at 5:59 pm

STEVE…..we are all not as rich as you are so yeah we are hard up for the money…oh and welfare doesn’t give enough to servive so thats a loss.

36 steve May 3, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Just because a person is not worried about getting a check does not mean he’s rich. By the way Keisa if you are going to survive in this world you should learn how to spell it.

37 Debi May 3, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Still same ole sh#@…..no info on website or rebate hotline, same ole “may have made a mistake”. I would Love some day to see how the “other half lives” and not need any “extra” money. I see nothing wrong with anticipating money being sent to us.
My aunt told me to look on AARP Website and it gave the 5th for the day the second batch to be deposited, yet the irs still lists it to be May 9th, which was when it was to be before “the big early speech” If you have to wait until it is time it is there for it to give us any info, why the heck did they bother to provide a place to check it?????????????????

38 Al May 3, 2008 at 9:30 pm

I think Steve is right. This is just a bonus check. You are lucky to get it. As for Jeremiah suck it up I’m sure you will find a job soon.

39 kesia May 4, 2008 at 12:09 am

Steve… the only way to take the focus off of your mistakes is to point out someone elses. Always remember that there are people out there, whos families are dependant on anything the government has to offer. Learn to be alittle bit more considerate and less judgemental. You could understand people alot better and not be so ignorant and accuse people of being, as you put it”hard up”.

40 maddognv May 4, 2008 at 8:10 am

Hey, I finally got something different than a error message. It still does’nt tell me sh*t. My S.S. end’s in 19. supposed to get it last week. >

42 Debi May 4, 2008 at 6:27 pm

maddognv That message is what I got for the first time beginning today. Until then I had gotten “may have made a mistake” so bottom line I still don’t know s#%t. We are in the second batch….and our original date was the 9th so why the H wouldn’t it be dd on the 5th…tomorrow if they are 4 days early. Like anything else with the gov……..f up.

43 Donna May 4, 2008 at 8:00 pm

Does anyone have any info about electronic filing? I filed online using H&R block the beginning of Feburary and had my refund directly deposited but I have read if you use an online agent you will receive you rebate via paper check . I was just wondering if anybody that commented on this site and didnt get their rebate yet electronically filed and that could be the problem ???? Any info would help

44 JoAnn May 4, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Donna,
If you filed using H&R Block you will get your check direct deposited as long as you paid your fees upfront using a debit or credit card. If you had your fees taken out of your refund, you will be getting a paper check regardless if you had direct deposit or not. Hope this helps !

45 Donna May 4, 2008 at 8:57 pm

JOAnn ty for the info , and I did pay my fees with a debit card so I will be getting my rebate direct deposited , thats good to know because I cant find any info on irs website about my rebate.

46 Jay May 5, 2008 at 8:10 am

This blows. I’m in the second group. I did my return through Turbo Tax but got to do it free through State Farm Insurance, so my tax return was DD from the US Treasury on 2/14/08. My last two SS numbers are 32, but nothing yet and nothing at the IRS site.

I’ll just write it off to typical bureaucratic nonsense on the part of the feds, but it’s still frustrating.

47 Amanda May 5, 2008 at 8:12 am

I checked my on the IRS website. Our ss # ends in 65. I thought they were going to send our rebeates 4 days early. Still no info. What shpuld we do. Call the Irs and tell them. Then we will all be on hold forever. This is so crazy!!!!!

48 Jay May 5, 2008 at 8:13 am

And I am guessing the ‘Where’s My Stimulus Payment’ tool is banging off some database that gets updated from time to time en masse because I just entered in a bogus SS number and some other info and immediately got the “We are sorry. Specific information about your Stimulus payment is not available.”

49 Debi May 5, 2008 at 9:18 am

Jay must be bored..ha!

We are in the second batch.
Last week the first message was; “may have made a mistake”
The end of the week it changed to ” sorry, no specific info”
This am at 8:00 it gave us the amount and it is scheduled to go in our account May 9th. This is NO EARLIER THAN THE ORIGINAL SCHEDULE BEFORE GOOD OLE GEORGE GAVE US ALL THE EARLY SPEECH. MAY 5TH IS NOT THE CORRECT INFO SO DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP BASED ON WHAT MANY WEBSITES HAVE POSTED CAUSE IT “AIN’T NECESSARILY SO” grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

50 Z May 5, 2008 at 9:44 am

I’ve been getting that error message for the past week. I just checked it again today and they finally had my info and said it would be DD on may 9th. My fiance is also scheduled to get hers on the 9th but she is still getting that error message on the irs website. So much for getting it early

51 Amanda May 5, 2008 at 9:57 am

I entered my info on wheres my rebeate, it gave me a error code. So I called on phone for 20 minutes. THe rep from the IRS said I was processed and should have my rebeate my 9th as well. She had not heard of the new schedule that was on the news. So as far she knew nobody would get there until the date the iRs has posted. Go firgue!

52 Marcus May 5, 2008 at 10:10 am

STEVE, you are a douche.

53 Kelly May 5, 2008 at 10:12 am

Amanda, that’s both comical and sad considering the announcement about the accelerated payments was on the IRS web site:
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=181972,00.html

54 Kelly May 5, 2008 at 10:15 am

Hey, keep it nice! No name calling! My mother could be reading.
http://www.taxgirl.com/official-comment-policy/

55 Jay May 5, 2008 at 10:32 am

Ok, get this! I tried under my SS# and get squat. I try under my wife’s and it worked! Said it would be DD on May 9th.

So those of you who are married, try and query it with your spouse’s SS number.

56 Wendy May 5, 2008 at 10:44 am

I checked the government website…my rebate was SUPPOSED to be directly deposited by the 2nd (my last digits are 05). No money. The irs website worked, but said I was due to be sent out on the 8th! wtf george…get your shit together…

57 Debi May 5, 2008 at 11:23 am

It just pi$$%$ me off that we were told this early $h*@ and got our hopes up and its all blow. MY schedule was the 9th prior to the big early speech and is still the 9th………go figure. Guess just like anything else you depend on that the gov says it will be doing…..HA!

58 Kim May 5, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Ok, the site worked for me. I wish it hadn’t though. It is saying that our rebate was reduced because of our qualifying income on our return. So, instead of the promised $1200 for married, we are only getting $600!!! Plus for the 3 kids, but come on!!!!! It is the exact same that my brother just rec’d for him, his wife and one kid! And not only that, original deposit…5/9. Now that is supposed to be a week earlier…5/9!!!!!!! Go figure! I am not a happy camper. Nor will my dh be when he gets home from work. This sucks!

59 april May 5, 2008 at 1:31 pm

I filed my taxes through turbo tax and had the fees taken out of my refund, I also had the refund D.D into my account. Is it true that because the fee’s were taken out of my refund that I will be getting a paper check instead of having the rebate d.d?

60 Jay May 5, 2008 at 6:03 pm

April that is correct. When you chose to have the fees taken out of your refund, a temporary account was set up with Santa Barbara Bank & Trust. The money from the Treasury was deposited there. SBB&T then deposited the money in your bank account. Because the IRS didn’t actually get your banking information, they’ll have to send a manual check.

61 Amanda May 5, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I checked the website. It did not work under my husband it did under mine. THe site was busy. Keep trying! LOts of luck. P.S.it was reduce a small amount because of my tax liabilty. Oh well. Happy to get one at all!!!

62 M May 5, 2008 at 9:26 pm

So what if you had to pay a fine out of your refund and got your refund DD will you still get it DD or MO

63 Yesno May 5, 2008 at 9:30 pm

M I dont know anything about that
But I did Tubro Tax for Free what about me

64 maddognv May 6, 2008 at 6:48 am

Here’s some answer’s if you had your tax prep fee’s taken out of your refund. The check’s in the mail. Maybe.
http://www.wkowtv.com/News/index.php?ID

65 Jamie May 6, 2008 at 7:31 am

My husband and I filed using Turbo Tax with direct deposit and were told by the IRS we would be getting a paper check in the mail.

66 Jamie May 6, 2008 at 7:34 am

Another bit of info..the IRS also told my husband that they have already started mailing out the checks and we could see ours in 7-10 days. Last two digits of ss are 15.

67 Jay May 6, 2008 at 9:19 am

With regard to TurboTax, it does not matter if the return was issued via direct deposit.

If you used TurboTax and either paid the fees up front with a debit or credit card or did it for free with DD, you’ll get your stimulus check via DD.

If you had the fees taken out of your refund, then even with DD you are going to get a check.

68 april May 6, 2008 at 9:25 am

Jamie-
do you by chance know the mailing schedule for turbo tax users that have a ssn ending in 10

69 Julie May 6, 2008 at 1:40 pm

For those of you who are frustrated by the “Check the status of your rebate” site you should take a few things into consideration…

1) The IRS website states that it will report the status of your rebate only a week before it’s scheduled for deposit/mailing. So if you’re scheduled to receive your rebate several weeks from now, you won’t be able to check the status for several weeks.

2) If you filed near April 15th, the IRS may have not finished processing your taxes until after 15th. The schedule only states that taxes “processed” before the 15th will receive their rebates by the scheduled dates. If you filed your taxes only a few days or weeks before the 15th, it’s more likely you’ll have to wait a minimum 6 weeks to receive your rebate.

I too am anxious to receive my payment, and I found this site pretty helpful: http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=181991,00.html

70 JoAnn May 7, 2008 at 4:35 pm

I went to the “where’s my stimulus payment” on the irs website on Monday, and after I put in the information(last two numbers 21) it gave me the amount and a deposit date of May 9. I was looking around on some message boards a little while ago, and a couple of people with the last two numbers of 50 actually got their check deposited already on Tuesday. Has anyone gotten their checks already if your scheduled date is 5-9-2008?

71 Debi May 7, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Our number is same as yours JoAnn. We were given the 9th also as day to be dd. As it is not there today, the only hope I have of “early” is every year we receive a refund and it is always scheduled to be deposited on a Friday, but it always shows up the day before on a Thursday. Don’t know if it will be the same deal or not but that’s the only hope I have of so called “early”. The 9th was our “original” date for dd back when we first received a letter concerning the stimulus so nothing changed for us.

72 JoAnn May 8, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Debi,
Nothing for me today, how about you ? Guess it will be (Lord willing) Friday 5-9. Hoping for at least a day early but…..(sigh)

73 Sara May 8, 2008 at 3:21 pm

So what if you owe your state department of revenue money? I had a debt to the state of MN for past-due tuition, it was $1200 and I’ve been paying $60/month on it religiously through a payment plan, and now have it down to just over $600.00 Does anyone know if they will be taking that kind of debt out of our economic stimulus checks?

74 Melinda May 8, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Well, I filed an injured spouse claim after my tax return was filed this year and they delayed and delayed my tax REFUND. Finally, they sent us a letter saying the whole amount was sent to my husbands back child support. Then I called and the IRS agent said that she couldn’t even find the injured spouse claim, which I know they received b/c I had called in March and another agent said an Injured spouse agent had been assigned to my case. Now, it had to be referred and another 30 days will pass. I just know they will take our whole rebate even though I filed the injured spouse claim like I was supposed to to get my share of the refund and rebate. I can’t believe they ever can do something right.

75 Govment101 May 8, 2008 at 6:29 pm

its all part of the master plan people…NWO.
-we start an occupation for oil and land and hide the truth-
-cost of living doubles at a rate never seen before-
-we give you a “tax stimuli” package to offset the high cost of living-
-we put up a false scripted page that gives no info-
-we create panic and anxiety so you will spend faster upon receipt-
-we approve billions for ‘war’ efforts yet our education system, our healthcare system and our people continues to suffer from lack of funding-
-a nation still asleep-
-a world in stagnation-

enjoy your stimuli
