If you’re already on Twitter, the list will make sense to you. If you’re not already on Twitter, here’s the scoop: Twitter is a social media site without the bells and whistles (and weird pressure) of Facebook. It’s a quick exchange of information, limited to 140 characters a pop. You can tweet opinions, news, pictures, or links or simply lurk and watch your feed, though it’s certainly more fun when you engage with others. Think of it as a cocktail party – only you don’t have to dress up if you don’t want to. You can tweet at work or in your pajamas. You can even have a drink while you tweet if you wish: nobody will be any wiser.
The key to enjoying Twitter is to find the right mix of folks to follow. For 2016, I’ve updated the list based on feedback from last year, comings and goings, and my own notes.
Some of the accounts are witty and amusing. Some can be dry (this is tax, after all). Some are heavy on self-promotion and others can be all over the map. That’s kind of how Twitter works. All, however, are worth a read.
As tax season kicks off, here are the top 100 tax Twitter accounts to follow, together with their profiles:

Keep in mind that this list is totally subjective. There’s no fancy algorithm. I didn’t count tweets or followers. I didn’t do any kind of scientific poll. If you find yourself on this list, well, er, congrats. That’s all there is. There are no fancy badges, no banners, nothing you can post on your LinkedIn profile that makes you any more special than you were a few moments ago except that you know that I like you, I really like you.
I’m sure that I left out some tax feeds that you enjoy – maybe by accident, maybe on purpose. It happens. If I left someone off that you think should have gotten some consideration this year, you can kindly let me know – kindly being the operative word.
One more thing: if you tweet about tax and I’m not following you, please @taxgirl on Twitter and let me know. Additionally, if you are a tax pro and are not included on my Twittering Tax Pro list, please @taxgirl and let me know to add you.
Thanks and tweet on.
