Boehner Claims House Victory, Mandate To Not Raise Taxes
Election, schmelection.
With many news outlets showing the economy as the #1 election issue (like this report from Orlando, which circulated on Drudge today), Representatives in the House dug in their heels with House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) saying that no matter the result, raising taxes won’t happen.
Pretty confident, right? Of course, he is. Republicans are expected to hold the House following the elections today, a move that Boehner says constitutes a mandate. And if President Obama is re-elected? No difference, claims Boehner, saying to POLITICO:
Listen, our majority is going to get reelected. We’ll have as much of a mandate as he will — if that happens — to not raise taxes. He knows what we can do and what we can’t do — I’ve been very upfront with him about it going back over the last year and a half.
So to recap: no matter who wins the Presidency tonight, nothing changes in the House. But then, after last year, you wouldn’t expect anything different, right?
