Senate Can’t Nail Down Budget, Does Have Time For Fruitcake

Kelly Phillips ErbDecember 12, 2012

Christmas came early this year for the Senate. No, there’s no budget deal – nothing so trivial as that. We’re talking super serious stuff. Like holiday parties.

Yes, in between speeches about how they can’t get anything done this year, the Senate Secret Santa Exchange went on as planned. Sixty-two Senators managed to agree to participate in the gift exchange, a number that was an increase from last year. Gifts ranged from North Carolina peanuts to Minnesota porridge to Alaskan wine (no, I didn’t know they made wine in Alaska either) to a DVD of “Harvard Beats Yale 29-29.”

Of course, there was food to be had. And unlike the budget, a great deal of thought went in to the menu. The Senate kitchen began making fruitcake a few months ago, long before Congress walked out on the country (at least the brandy had enough time to soak the cake).

So now you have all of the important details. As for that other stuff, like the budget? Pish. There’s time for that later, right?
