The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently issued a reminder to taxpayers that there’s another outlet for IRS tax tips, videos and more: Tumblr. Tumblr is a microblogging platform where users access and share text, photos, videos and other information from their smartphone, tablet or computer.
It’s the latest foray for IRS into social media which has been slowly building a presence on several sites. Originally just limited to browsing their website, you can now connect with IRS on Twitter using any number of accounts including @IRSnews or @IRSenEspanol. You can also watch videos in English, American Sign Language and other languages on the IRS YouTube Channel.
IRS does have a Facebook page for taxpayers but doesn’t generally maintain it: the timeline is never updated. The IRS Facebook page for tax professionals is a different story as it is updated regularly but has this plea for taxpayers:
TAXPAYERS: PLEASE DON’T POST YOUR TAX INFO ON SOCIAL MEDIA! IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE, GO TO IRS.GOV.
Don’t forget that you can easily find many of these social media sites using the IRS mobile app. IRS2Go allows you to get tax news updates and watch IRS YouTube videos on your phone ( who doesn’t want to spend their free time surfing tax videos?). IRS reported during the 2015 tax season that over 5.5 million people have downloaded the free app, which is available in both English and Spanish for the iPhone, iTouch or Android mobile devices.
