12 Days Of Charitable Giving (2015): Cops For Kids With Cancer

Kelly Phillips ErbDecember 23, 2015January 14, 2022

It’s the fourth day of my 12 Days of Charitable Giving. Readers have suggested deserving charities over the past few weeks and I’ll be posting one a day for – well, 12 days (I’m clever that way). Today’s charity is Cops For Kids With Cancer.

Cops For Kids With Cancer began as a golf rivalry between Captain Dow’s Boston Police team and members of Ireland’s Garda Siochana, led by Detective Pat Hanlon. That group determined that the event should raise funds to be donated to a local hospital, specifically to help children with cancer. Over a decade later, the organization still carries on its wonderful mission.

Today, the all-volunteer organization works to raise funds for those directly involved in the care of children with cancer, with each family typically receiving $5,000. The goal of the organizations is to help the children and their caregivers through this most difficult crisis. In many cases, a parent of a child with cancer must leave a job; some treatments are not fully covered by insurance.

Donations to Cops For Kids With Cancer have saved a family from eviction, helped pay down overwhelming bills, and paid to repair the only vehicle used to travel back and forth to the hospital. In the last 4 years, including donations to hospitals, Cops For Kids With Cancer has given to over 280 families in need, totaling more than $1,400,000. So how can you help?

To make a one-time donation via credit card, you can click over to the website. Donations may also be sent by mail to:

Braintree, Ma. 02185

Cops For Kids With Cancer also welcomes corporate sponsors. Corporate sponsors include Bank of America; Bertucci’s; Boston Red Sox; Dunkin Donuts; TD Bank and more.

If you want to go the extra mile – quite literally – you can join the 2016 Cops for Kids With Cancer Boston Marathon Team. Space on the team is limited, so top consideration will be given to those applicants who commit to fundraising goals above the required $10,000 minimum. For more information, check out the organization’s website.

As always, you want to make sure that your donation is going to a qualified charitable organization. A search using the IRS’ Exempt Organizations Select Check reveals that Cops For Kids With Cancer is on the list. To find out more about the work of the organization, check out their website or join their Facebook group.

Remember: submissions to the 12 Days of Charitable Giving are made by readers and in most cases, I can’t personally vouch for the good work that these folks do. So be generous. But be smart. Do your homework.
