Getting To Know You Tuesday: Brad Garland

Kelly Phillips ErbJune 26, 2012June 16, 2020

It’s back!

I’m thrilled to announce the relaunch of my popular – and fun – series, Getting To Know You Tuesdays. In the series, I ask tax pros a series of questions, some serious, some not so serious. It’s a great way to get to know tax pros around the world and discover that we are (allegedly) human and we do (occasionally) leave the office. Enjoy!

Jump starting the relaunch is our interview with Brad Garland (@hagacpas) of Hall Albright Garrison & Associates in Huntsville, Alabama.

1. Where are you now?
My office

2. What’s your official title and what does it mean?
Tax manager at Hall Albright Garrison & Associates – it means I coordinate the work (tax returns, tax planning, etc) with staff and meet with clients

3. What books are on your night stand?
Scorecasting & The Testament of Jessie Lamb

4. If you weren’t working in the tax profession, what would your dream job be?
paleontologist (Author’s note: also my 6 year old’s dream job)

5. What’s the last movie that you saw (DVD or in the theatre)?
The Avengers

6. Tax is a huge subject. What’s your area of special interest?
Exempt organizations, low-income housing tax credits

7. What’s the best tax or financial advice that anyone ever gave you?
Don’t buy a house yet (circa 2008)

8. Coffee or tea?
neither

9. Name five artists on your iPod (or mp3 player).
OK Go, Childish Gambino, North Mississippi Allstars, Jonathan Coulton, Dropkick Murphys

10. What would I be surprised to know about you?
I go to hot yoga

11. What college did you attend (in what subject)?
Auburn University, accounting

12. If you had the opportunity to make one change in the tax code tomorrow – an extra credit, a disallowed deduction, whatever – what would it be?
Make a portion of the charitable contribution deduction an additional standard deduction (á la the real estate tax add’l standard deduction from 08, 09)

13. What’s the best thing on TV right now?
Mad Men

14. What do you think Congress will repeal first: estate tax or AMT?
AMT, after creation of a new, higher tax bracket

15. If Uncle Sam handed you a huge refund check right now, what would you do with it?
fund my IRA (exciting, right?)

16. Biggest tax newsmaker: Obama, Bloomberg or Buffett?
Buffett

17. And, other than taxgirl, what’s your favorite tax related web site?
The revamped irs.gov is very useful!

Thanks, Brad! Of course, I’m still trying to process your answer to #8…
