The Internal Revenue Service has issued a reminder that Boston area taxpayers and others affected by the Boston Marathon bombings have until Monday, July 15, 2013, to file their individual 2012 federal income tax returns and make any payments due.
The relief, which was announced just days after the tragedy, applies to all individual taxpayers who live in Suffolk County. It includes not only the victims, their families, and first responders but also any folks who relied on tax preparers who lived in those areas or who were otherwise affected by the tragedy.
The relief means that no filing and payment penalties will be assessed on those affected taxpayers so long as they meet the new, July 15 deadline. By law, any interest due began to accrue on the normal April deadline.
To take advantage of the relief, eligible taxpayers should call 866-562-5227 before filing a return or making a payment. If you still need more time, you can file a federal form 4868 (downloads as a pdf) by July 15 to extend the due date for filing to October 15, 2013.
