Technical Difficulties – Please Stand By (Whilst I Pull My Hair Out)

October 23, 2008 · 4 comments

On yesterday, the site went wild. Errors, errors everywhere. Broken links, no feed, two to three of the same posts at once, total chaos. I was not happy.

I received a bunch of feedback from you guys – thanks for keeping me posted as to what you were seeing/experiencing. It is often different from what I see. So, your emails and notes were much appreciated.

As a result of the craziness, some of you may have received what appeared to be duplicate emails from my feed, had difficulty posting comments or just encountered a bunch of errors. Sorry! I tried my darnedest to fix it for the large part of the day. And I couldn’t. But fortunately, there are people who actually do know this tech stuff and they helped me.

So, many thanks to the wonderful folks at 1&1 (my host) who, despite a few, um, *moments* on yesterday where I might not have responded as politely and calmly as a nice young lady raised in the South would, fixed my problem. As it turns out, the chaos was largely the result of a nasty plugin which wreaked havoc with my server.

It appears that everything is back to normal this morning (well, as normal as I get). If you notice anything askew, let me know.

And thanks again to 1&1 – I really do appreciate it!

What plugin? Did 1&1 do a roll back for you?

The plugin was YARPP – for related posts – which has since been removed (also kicked and sworn at). Not sure what “roll back” means but they did a thorough review of the logs and fixed stuff.

Thanks. I’ll stay away from it!

The first time I upgraded WP I totally broke the site. Called my host (Bluehost) and they did a roll back (not sure if that’s the technical term or not), reverting the site to a snapshot of what it looked like 24 hours before.

Glad to hear 1and1 was good. I have an old hosting account with them for some not very active sites, but maybe I’ll put my TypePad site there once I migrate it to WP.

BTW, I’m looking forward to the NC tax review!
