12 Days of Charitable Giving: USO

December 20, 2008 · 2 comments

It’s the sixth day of my 12 Days of Charitable Giving. To recap, I’ve asked a panel of judges to review a number of deserving charities as suggested by my readers. I’ll be posting one a day for – well, 12 days (I’m clever that way).

I encourage you to check out the charities voted “most deserving” by my readers and judges. Remember that these are just suggestions and, in most cases, we can’t personally vouch for the good work that these folks do. So be smart. And be generous.

Today’s featured charity was submitted by Caroline. Caroline writes:

*** Our troops and their families give so much to our country – we should all honor their sacrifice, regardless of our feelings about the war. The troops are just doing their duty.
“The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The USO currently operates more than 130 centers worldwide, including ten mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas. Service members and their families visit USO centers more than 5.3 million times each year. The USO is the way the American public supports the troops.”

A search at irs.gov (which I highly recommend any time you are considering making a donation) reveals that USO of Philadelphia is on the IRS list of charitable organizations.

I’m the guest judge for today. In the spirit of giving, I decided not to plug my own suggestions and instead chose the USO. If you’re a regular reader, you know that my brothers are both Navy boys, one currently and one retired. I am a big fan of organizations who have as their main goal, the support and assistance of our military personnel and their families.
