My first money lesson: My mother told my brother and me that Santa sent her and dad a bill for our Christmas presents. That made us prioritize!
Funny! My mom told us that Santa had a limit, so we would dutifully keep that in mind as we scoured through the JCPenney catalog.
An aside: makes me sad that department stores don’t do catalogs anymore. It taught us a ton of lessons about costs, colors, keeping records, etc.
totally agree! I loved Sears’ “Wish Book.” Always kept the annual copy stored under my bed for after bedtime “reading.” Sears had a small storefront in my tiny West Texas hometown’s downtown that opened up each November to take orders (and receive shipments) from the catalog.
We told our kids when they were young that Santa couldn’t bring new toys if the toybox was full of old toys. It was a good way to clear up some clutter and get still useable toys to charities.
