While taxpayers in many post offices across the country might have been singing the blues, those in the Lawrence, Kansas post office were singing a different tune. The Alferd Packer Memorial String Band made their traditional appearance at the post office on Tax Day to help ease last-minute tax jitters.
The band, named after the only American convicted of cannibalism (if the story holds true) is a bluegrass/folk group founded in 1979. Twenty-five years ago, the band was looking for somewhere new to play and made the post office their target. At the urging of postal workers and taxpayers, they’ve returned every year. This year, however, may be their last. Dwindling numbers (darn those e-filers) and budget cuts at the post office (resulting in shorter hours) have made the event a little less impressive than it used to be. Still, taxpayers who had to wait in line enjoyed the show, I’m sure. Follows is a video of the Alferd Packer Memorial String Band’s Tax Day 2008 performance:
Nice! Glad they’re able to have fun with the tax day deadline. I’m sure that customers appreciate it too, it can put a smile on their face amidst a stressful day.
