The IRS has announced that it will no longer mail tax forms to taxpayers. Beginning this week, taxpayers who have previously filed a paper form (about 8% of filers) will receive a postcard with instructions on how they can get paper forms if they need them for the 2010 tax year. Of course, the irony of mailing something to taxpayers to advise that they won’t be receiving something in the mail is delicious, is it not?
Paper forms will still be available, just not automatically through the mail. The forms will be available at the usual locations: post offices, libraries, and other public spaces. Additionally, you can walk into an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (find yours here) and pick up a form. Taxpayers who have internet access (and I’m assuming you do or you wouldn’t be reading this now) can download forms and instructions at the IRS web site.
Free e-filing options, including Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Taxpayer Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs, are available to a number of qualifying taxpayers. Stop by Taxgirl.com in January (when tax season officially begins) for details about how to qualify and to find a program near you.
