Taxpayer asks:
hi taxgirl , i have a question, i bought a 2009 nissan on january 17 2009,do i qualify for the sales tax deduction?
Taxgirl says:
Don’t hate me but no. The law says that the new car must be purchased after February 16, 2009 and before January 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction.
But hey, look on the bright side… It’s not a Chrysler.

Can you deduct the car sales tax on a new lease if paid upfront?
I am extremely offended about Chrysler under a topic posted under New Car Sales Tax Deduction. I have owned Chryler products for my entire life (I’ve had at least 25 new Chrysler products) and have never had any issues with these outstanding products. You should be ashamed of yourself for trashing a company that has provided great jobs to US citizens, who by the way pay taxes, allowing you the opportunity to give tax advice. Your comments on Chrysler are unwarranted and inappropriate in a blog on taxes.
It was firmly tongue-in-cheek. And I’m not ashamed at all – Chrysler, on a management level, was not a model company in 2009. I think their record speaks for itself.
