Ask The Taxgirl: Second Round Of Stimulus Checks

Kelly Phillips ErbJuly 30, 2008December 4, 2019

Taxpayer asks:

I work for an accounting firm and my boss mentioned she had heard on TV (gotta love the media) that because the first round of stimulus checks didn’t stimulate the economy as they thought ( I loved your – who really did profit from the stimulus checks), that the IRS was considering another round of “rebates”. Have your heard this?

Taxgirl says:

This is a popular question!

Despite the fact that one of my readers wrote in to tell me how very wrong I am on this one, I’m standing by the idea that I don’t think there will be a second round of checks any time soon. It makes a nice argument for the politicians, but I don’t think it’s economically sensible.

I have heard talk of what’s being called a “second economic stimulus package” but it focuses on providing funding for government programs (like state infrastructure) and not individual checks for taxpayers.

Sorry!

I found it not quite right that kids received as much money as senior citizens that worked so many years.

i completely disagree on the younger people getting as much as older people. You have had a chance to build up your lifes money. We haven’t. We were thrown into this “resession”. I have 2 kids and it still wasn’t enough.

I agree with you amanda frank as well.. I am young myself and i have to kids an infant and a toddler, and the first round helpped me out just a little bit a 2nd round would be nice. And as far as older people well seniors….thats going off of years ago…these chks were for the economy as of today and middle class, single parents deserve these stimulus chks….So loretta who ever you are read the facts before you start critisizing!!!!

That’s likely the specific credit for disabled and retirees as part of the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The large majority of working Americans will qualify for a withholding “Make Work Pay Credit” and will not receive a second check.
