Don’t Make Me Have to Wash Your Mouth Out With Soap

In recent days, I’ve noticed a disturbing number of comments with *not so polite* (and that’s the nice term) references to folks based on their ethnicity and other physical attributes. Those comments have been deleted.

You have the right not to like somebody for whatever reason you want, even though I may think it’s kind of silly. But you don’t have the right to say those kinds of things on my blog.

If you want to criticize politicians based on their politics, their lack of smarts, their tax liabilities, go right ahead. If you want to say that certain sports figures should be paid less because they suck, hey, knock yourself out (though go easy on my Phils or my 4 year old might be coming after you). If you think “celebs” like Joe Francis and Wesley Snipes are idiots, fine. Spill, I’m cool with that.

What I’m not cool with are derogatory remarks about race, color, ethnicity, sexual preference or gender. I know that in a bad economy, tempers can run high when folks feel like those who are perceived as different are getting an advantage. And I know I can’t change how you feel. But I can change where you say it. Go spew somewhere else.

I’m deleting offensive comments as a first step. If I see repeat offenders, you’ll be put into moderation automatically.

You can read my comment policy here. Remember, my mother could be reading. And she has enough to worry about – trust me.

RIGHT ON Kelly! This WASP has only one thing to add. Any imbecile whose self esteem is so rock-bottom low that they rely on racial slurs to feel better about themselves should be standing (quietly) in line for a brain transplant.

Bravo Kelly! I haven’t seen any of the comments you’re referring to, but am glad I won’t have to. Name-calling belongs on the playground, not in a grown-up forum about tax issues (or about any other issue for that matter)

How is someone’s IQ (lack of smarts, “idiots”) any different from other traits like ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation that are beyond one’s control?
Your politics and ideas are well within your control but smarts? You are trying to sound magnanimous but it is not ringing true, except maybe for all the people who feel better about their political ideas by calling Pres. Bush dumb.
“…politics, their lack of smarts (perceived IQ), their tax liabilities”… one of these is not like the others, one of these just doesn’t belong.

I firmly believe there’s a difference between IQ and smarts. I know some very high IQ folks who make dumb choices. And that’s what I’m referring to – I think my readers know that. To try and make anything else out of it is grasping at straws, sorry.
