Fix The Tax Code Friday: War Tax

Kelly Phillips ErbOctober 5, 2007

Some members of Congress have proposed a “war tax” to fight the increasing costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Opponents are crying “no more taxes” while others scramble to reconcile a budget spiraling out of control. So today’s question is:

Should Congress impose a war surtax in order to pay for the war? If not, do you think it’s fair to pass along the cost to future generations? Is there a better way to pay for the war?

Maybe those that planned the war in Iraq should be the persons that pay for the war. War cannot be run in a democratic way, but the elected leaders and those appointed by those elected leaders should be held accountable to the those who the govern or speak on behalf of. This war has gone from stopping a tyrant, to a noble expansion of democracy in the Middle East, but these were but excuses by Cheney and Bush (and their appointees) to cover the real reason, oil!. Had all the monies been spent to help the American people, enough has been spent that a viable alternative for energy could have been developed and a distribution system set in place. Politics seems to be stuck on oil. “Big Oil” greases lots of palms in Washington. It doesn’t have to be that way.
The next generations will be saddled with enormous debt from a poorly planned policy and poorly executed plan. Sad too, they are saddled with developing an energy alternative too.
Not one of the candidates hoping to be the next president, has drove a stake in the ground, and said enough, man on the moon approach, a national goal of energy independance. The Islamic world wants to kill itself off, then let them. We should protect our national interests, our friends (if we have any left), and let the Islamic world stay in the Dark Ages.
Another method to pay for the war, would be any profits made from books written by those who contributed to this failed policy, would be forfeited to pay for the War. They are on our “nickel” anyway, so why should they gain riches from their mistakes. Isn’t this a Enron like affair. We’re gonna win. We’re gonna win. Mission accomplished. Stay the Course!. Then 20 Jan 2009, it’s yours.
Their best is not good enough for those in Washington in the past six years. Even our liberties have been whittled at buy those who want to control everything. Our democracy has withsttod challenges from without numerous times. Our enemies to our democracy are from within.
