Identity Thieves Moving In On Stimulus Checks

September 10, 2008 · 2 comments

Imagine this:

You file your 2007 tax return just like normal.
You get your economic stimulus check.
And life goes on, right?

What if, a few months later, you got a letter from the IRS asking you why you filed TWO tax returns for the same year? Using different addresses?

Yep, that’s what happened to my mom. Someone using her name and Social Security number filed months after she did – using a different mailing address – in what is apparently an effort to get her stimulus check. Ha, thieves! She already has it!

But keep an eye out, people. Identity thieves will try anything – and everything.

So, did they find the person who did it?

If they did, they won’t say. Ironic, huh, how the IRS will protect the privacy of the person who took your information?
