We’re 28! We’re 28!

That’s right, according to the Tax Foundation, Pennsylvania ranks 28th in State Individual Income Tax Collections for 2006. The state collected just over $9 billion in income tax, averaging $725 per capita.

The top state for collections? Connecticut.

The lowest? Tennessee, ranked 43rd.

Wait… There are 50 states, right? Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not collect state income tax.

Which makes me curious. What state are you from (or country, if outside of the US)?

Hi Kelly,
NH doesn’t collect state income tax either. Unless the legislature and the governor have passed a law they haven’t publicized! We do have a tax on business income though.

Kelly,
Like all good southern states, South Carolina is 34th. With a big $631 per capita. At least we are not last or next to last on this one. LOL

As a resident of Pennsylvania, I’m not upset about the state tax. It’s the Business Privilege Tax and Net Profits tax that irk me. They don’t even exclude the first $6,000 – 10,000 dollars of income — as a small business in Philadelphia I am taxed from the first dollar I bring in.
