Ask The Taxgirl: Prior Year Forms 1099 And W-2

Kelly Phillips ErbFebruary 16, 2008December 4, 2019

Taxpayer asks:

Hello Tax Girl,

I know that there is a form that I can send to the IRS and they will respond with reported 1099’s for 2005. Do you know which form(s) that would be?

Thank you for your help.

Taxgirl says:

It’s not clear from your question whether you have filed a tax return or not. If you’re trying to ascertain whether a 1099 was filed for a particular year and you want the specifics, you can request a tax return transcript.

The tax return transcript show what was filed by you (such as your tax return) as well as what was filed on your behalf (items like forms W-2 and 1099).

You can order a transcript for any of the past three tax years by either completing a form 4506-T (available here as a pdf) or call 1.800.829.1040 (if you call during tax season, W-2IRSbe prepared to wait). The service is free. You should receive your information in about 10 business days.
