Taxpayer asks:
Our first check came and went. I have heard that they are considering sending another one. Do you think that they will send a second check?
Taxgirl says:
No. I don’t think a second check is in the cards – for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the economy.
Guess you are wrong what you said about us not getting a second stimulus check! we ARE getting a second one. there are talks about it right this second! we ARE getting a 2nd stimulus check, so you are wrong wrong wrong!! Looks like it IS in the cards!! what other things are you wrong on? geez! how would YOU know anyway? YOU DONT!
Will felons who have never been in jail receive stimulus checks?
If I understand the question, you’re asking whether a previous felony means you cannot receive a check? If so, the answer is no. The IRS has only suggested that currently incarcerated persons are barred from getting a check.
Thanks for your, um, insightful comments.
There have been talks about a second check ever since the first one went out… And with a recent poll showing that 78% of businesses saying that the first set (which isn’t even completed yet) didn’t affect the economy at all, I stand by my opinion that it’s a bad idea and I don’t think that there will be more checks any time soon.
I did a quick check around my sources and I don’t see any firm indications that a second check is actually a real possibility. In fact, what I did see was just a week or so ago, Fed Chair Bernanke claiming that it was too early to consider a second stimulus check. I hear politicians saying not much more than Americans would like to see more money. If being wrong on this one puts me on the side of folks like Bernanke instead of short-sighted politicians, I’m okay with that.
I’m one of those who thought the first stimulous was just a smoke screen to divert attentions from the real issue at hand.
Someone up on Capital Hill has a bright idea to get money in the hands of American’s who like to spend – so they would all go shopping and lose sight of the massive mistakes that are occurring in our government and will take generations to fix.
I got mine – donated part to a *NOT* Republican and invested the other by putting it in my kids college bound accounts – didn’t spend a damn dime to boost the economy. Capital Hill can send more, that’s fine – I’ll do the same thing all over again.
I think that Angel over-reacted a bit. According to what I have read, the “Son of Stimulus” talks are just that. Talks. They are only dicussing the idea, and many don’t think that it will do the economy any good.
People are putting it away in savings because they are scared to spend the money. They think that if the economy is failing they will need to have it later.
I personally just paid off my credit card bills for things that I had ALREADY bought. It didn’t really go into the economy at all.
Plus I’m a college student and any extra money from a second check would just go to pay off my student loans.
I found a good article that was written last week at: http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20080721/ts_csm/astim. It was talking about all of the things I just mentioned.
I want to believe that they are going to send me more money. My grandmother and mother are convinced that they WILL. I’ll just wait and be suprised (or not).
A ‘smokescreen’, huh? Well, since the ‘democrats’ are in control in Congress, it just might be. Maybe what they should have stated is we’ll give you the check IF you spend it the way we want you to, but wait, this is America. So, who cares how you spent the money? You spend $ every day! Sometimes, it’s just gas prices and sometimes, it’s for food for lunch, etc. And, forgive me for saying this, but THAT’S what’s wrong with this entire economy… too many chiefs and not enough Indians.
Well I spent the money- every penny! I will do so again if another check is given. I don’t do it to boost the economy, I do it because it is extra money. I have to be responsible with money from work so this is nothing but “sp.lurge” money to me
Yeah…I got a comment…my stimulus check went for my utility bills and food for my kids and I would gladly take another stimulus check. Must be nice to be able to sock it away for a kid’s college account…for alot of us, it is an immediate need to help keep our noses above water. Some of us live paycheck to paycheck and a stimulus check gives momentary relief. I’ll be praying for another check, saw it on the news they are considering it, smokescreen or not, I’ll take it. I had to quit an out-of-town job because all my extra money & even bill money went in my gas tank to get there. So, BRING IT ON!!!!LOL!!!!
It is fact that there have been talks about a second check and even Bush has had a wait and see on the effect from the first round. He touted success but admitted it didn’t do as much as they had hoped. I think it’s possible we’ll see a second check but I’m not banking on it myself. We spent all of ours the same day it came as they had hoped for because saving a measly $900 isn’t going to make or break us if hard times come (not to mention saving money even though it’s a good idea actually harms the economy. don’t spend money= less work= no jobs). Everyone under the sun has a different opinion on whether a second check would help or have no effect but it’s an election year and they want votes and MOST of the public wants money regardless of whether they are conservative or liberal. So it would make sense if they rushed out another round to get voter support.
yes my family could definitely use another stimulis
just for groceries. We didn’t even have enough
food to feed our children this weekend. It’s like that often. The situation is getting very old and something needs to be done.
i dont know whats even going on i got the news from my sister and i think we should get something reasons being do you know how much money is just setting here in the usa a lot and its not being used for nothin so why not help the americans our country is so in to helping the other countries why not give something back to the americans i have 5 kids and am a single mom so yes this would come in handy and like my other money it goes to my bills leaving me with no money to do things with my kids so i say yes to the 2nd check and if you dont agree just goes to say you have enough and you dont really care but i dont so i say heck yeah so if we get it ill be happy to take it and do something nice with my kids thanks Barbara in Texas speaking my mind
Sheryn Alston!
It’s so nice that you have a computer and can go online your post your comments. Too bad you
need food to feed your kids. Or maybe you were just exaggerating about that. I would really hate to think you would spend money on an internet connection before you bought food for your children. Yes a stimulus check always helps and turning it down isn’t even a consideration for me! But…. I will stop paying every bill except rent and utilities to keep food on my table. Reposess our car, turn off the cable, can live without the internet, and I guess the phones will have to go on hold cause we HAVE to eat.
Shahrani in NY
If the 1st check didn’t get the results desired, I would suggest that a 2nd check would be better spent if sent out right after Thanksgiving. Imagine all that money in the being spent at stores on the Holidays. WOW! Now that would be “stimulating” 🙂
Gene
I was very excited when I found out that American’s would get the first check, I thought of all the good things that I could do with it; like I could buy my kids new shoes and clothes, not ones from Goodwill. When the check came we used it for rent, food, and bills. That was it. I would more than welcome a second one, but I also will not hold my breath!
ShahraniH!!!
Your comments to Sharyn Alston were uncalled for. For all you know, she could be online at WORK, as I am. I too have trouble keeping food in my house for my kids. Prices are going through the roof for EVERYTHING. I don’t know if we’ll get another check but if we do, mine will go towards food and utility bills. Just like the last one. It is VERY much needed in my home!
p.s. don’t pass judgement on people that you don’t know! You have NO idea what a person may be going through! And you definately don’t know WHERE a person get on the internet at…family’s house, work, and get this PUBLIC LIBRARIES even have internet!!!
I FEEL EVERYONE SHOULD JUST SIT BACK AND SEE WHAT HAPPEN
You tell her KAREN
The economy is failing and people are turning super-paranoid. Corporations are crushing us! You can send out all the stimulus checks you want but until the bigwigs start dropping prices to help the little guys out, it’s really not going to affect the economy much. I realize that a lot of these guys are of the mentality that they got big by pinching pennies but if people have the pennies to spare, they should do so. We’re all being pushed outside the boundaries of financial security and being able to afford necessities is top priority but all work and no play… turns everyone crazy. There are even dividing lines in my own family of rich and poor. The sick part of it is that those of us in the family that are poor are pulling each other through this and the rich ones in our family aren’t lifting a finger to help, even keeping contact a lot less. One could hope out of guilt. Do rich people not realize that if things really go to hell for most of us that they too will eventually lose their money to skyrocketing prices? I can go on forever on how we’re losing out on power in almost every aspect of our country and how we’re all digging our own graves, but hell, bring on another stimulus check! I need all the fun I can get before the shit hits the fan! I’ll probably be paying my dad what little rent I can scrape by with and living at home forever at this rate so I might as well find what little joy is left. My situation could be worse after all. I could be going through a messy divorce and have kids while trying to scrape through this. Believe me, I do count my blessings, but this is no American dream!
Enough with the complaints already. Everyone has to do what they have to do to survive. If you don’t make enough money, work a second job. Many of my age group worked second jobs to make ends meet. If you think your government is going to take care of you? Don’t hold your breath. Like “Will Rogers said in the 30’s ” Don’t Make fun of our congressmen” “They are the best men money can buy”. ,It was true then and it’s true now. Everyone is going to have to get back to basics. Grow a garden, clip coupons, drive your vehicle only when absolutely necessary and only keep one credit card ( the cards are responsible for 90% of our debt problems). P.S. Will Rogers was very popular during the 1920’s and 30’s His humor and sage advice were appreciated by thousands of Americans
Krista you have rich family members? and they won’t help you with your financial situation? Question Why? You live at home and have to scrape up your poor fathers rent money? Get back to school learn a trade. DO SOMETHING FOR YOU SELF. I know that what I’m saying to you, upsets you. It is not done to be mean spirited. Krista you sound like an intelligent female. You can make it on your own, Just believe in yourself and take action. Good luck Paul
I have read and seen on the news that talk of another check is infact being thought of. Now should you count on that? No of crouse not but dont think for a minute you might not becuase the first one didnt do its job, the goverment is if nothing else a repeat of bad ideas. So if they thing it will bust any thing they will do it, though this one is said to be more? We will see, just use the money as best fits your family. food, savings gas, fun money . what ever you are able to do with it.
Thanks for your comment. I didn’t say that a second stimulus plan wasn’t being discussed, I just don’t believe that one will pass. The initial buzz in the summer was that one would try to go out before the next elections – with just about a month ago, I can firmly say that it is an impossibility that new checks would hit the public before the November elections. Our government is not that efficient at the best of times.
I also think, considering the huge amounts of money involved in the current bailout AND Congress’ repeated failures to agree on legislation for the bailout, that no agreement for a stimulus package will happen before the elections. I can’t imagine a scenario where they would reach a compromise on more expensive legislation that soon.
My personal opinion remains that nothing significant will happen this year – and even if a package manages to pass, it will focus on jobs and infrastructure, not more checks.
I know of 3 people that have recieved a second stimulus check as of today–October 4th. They already recieved their 1st check–they all were in the 1st round. I told them to hold on to it and get ahold of the IRS to see if it was a mistake or a second stimuls check. Just seems funny all 3 would be a mistake.
Donna,
I suspect that the three folks you’re referring to are parents who were the victims of a prior IRS mistake.
In May, the IRS admitted that they made an error on more than 350,000 rebate checks by failing to include the child credit. The original story was here: http://www.taxgirl.com/irs-admits-human-error-in-processing-tax-rebates-child-credit-omitted/ Checks to make up the difference were mailed three months after the original checks went out.
Additionally, checks for military folks with noncitizen spouses were also delayed. That story was here: http://www.taxgirl.com/ask-the-taxgirl-spouses-military-and-itins/ Those checks were to be mailed in November but it’s possible that they were early.
There is, however, NO second check under an additional tax package that is being mailed out at this time.
2 out of 3 are not married with no children who already recieved 300 for their first amount and just recieved another check of 349. Like I said I told them to call the irs. The one who is married does not have children and already recieved 600 don’t know the amount of her 2nd check.
What in the world did the government think $600 would do? Most people who have house payments pay more then that a month. I used mine to pay bills.
Now there is this talk about billions of dollars to finance companies to keep them a float. I recently received this email and I have to say I feel the same way.
This sooo works for me!
I’m definitely against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.
Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We
Deserve It Dividend.
To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000 bona
fide U.S. Citizens 18+.
Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.. So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00. My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It
Dividend. Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%. Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00.
What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?
Pay off your mortgage * housing crisis solved.
Repay college loans * what a great boost to new grads.
Put away money for college * it’ll be there.
Save in a bank * create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
Buy a new car * create jobs.
Invest in the market * capital drives growth.
Pay for your parent’s medical insurance * health care improves
Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean * or else.
Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces. If we’re going to re-distribute wealth let’s really do it…instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( “vote buy” ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.
If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+! As for AIG * liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t. Sure it’s a crazy idea that can “never work.” But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party! How do you spell Economic Boom? I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion We Deserve It Dividend more than do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC.
And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.
My question is how will this not help improve the economy? And 10-1 all of these finance companies would be getting a lot of this money handed to them any how. Hell I would be happy if it were distributed per household.I would use it to provide a better home for my children and pay off all of my bills and past debt I have. Then with what is left I would invest it.
Alesha…You should run for office. That is the best plan I have ever heard!! It makes sense. Why wouldn’t the govt think of something this simple?
SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS?????? I only received $300!! I make less than $15k a year, too! I think I got scammed!
On the flip side, I used that stimulus check back in May for a down payment on a slightly used 50cc scooter and let me tell you, it was foreshadowing BRILLIANCE, considering the gas shortage that the southeast suffered after the hurricanes blew thru the gulf! I still had to wait over a half an hour (for one measely gallon of gas, mind you) and I worried for several days before that as to whether or not I would run out before I could find a shipment, but to end up paying only around $4.25 (and that’s for premium!) versus some of the horrific prices I heard from family, friends, and coworkers (some saying they couldn’t get more than $50 or $60, the gas stations were limiting).
Even if i only get another $300, it will go towards upkeep for the scooter that has saved my wallet, as well as to buy some winter gear so I can ride it once the weather turns cold (except on the worst of days).
P.S. I also like that idea that Alesha had, too! (“We Deserve It Dividend”) Aah, but if something like that could happen, rather than get the scraps and leftovers after the politicians finish taking “their” chunk, right?
Thank you….
yea my sister told me today she said they pass the bill for the next set of Stimulus checks i sure hope so that would help people in christmas . have you heard anything about it . thanks ann
Unfortunately, your sister got it wrong. Congress is on break. They’re simply talking about it, there was no vote today.
I love Alesha’s plan, but 85,000,000,000 divided by 200,000,000 is only 425…
I think they are going to consider a nother stimiulus check and encourage people to spend it on the holidays. What the goal here is to not have the Xmas shopping saeson drop so low in sales that people loose there jobs. So if there is another one I encourage people to put at least half toward the holiday season.
Alesha, run for president and you have my vote.
I wonder why it is that this government cannot see that the working people are the ones that spend the money that keeps this economy a float… These are the people that run our country that have not even mastered basic cause and effect… (Well guess we can go ahead and get rid of standardized testing because it certainly doesn’t help in adulthood :)) What I want to know is where they are getting this said “bailout” money from in the first place? I know Obama who started this month out with over $133 MILLION in the bank isn’t going to throw in, I don’t knowwwww half of that to help the middle class…. How about McCain…72 years old so we KNOW he’s had quite some time to put back the funds…Is he pitching in $65 MILLION or so? Bush? Biden? Palin? Are any of these people who claim that they are sooo concerned actually going to help the cause… I doubt it… I think the bail out could be a good idea if it was going to the right people… As in to WORKING Americans…
Another stimulus will not help us permanently and thats what we need… Yes it will give us a month of relief but then we will be right back to this mess… Ironically the same time that we were getting these checks gas was at its highest…. Sooo not many people really enjoyed that check… I guarantee that the IRS was flooded with calls from people who NEEDED that money and wanted to know when it would arrive… And thats just ridiculous…
I hope they (the morons that run our country) wise up and get this country back to where it should be. Not going to hold my breath though… Good luck to everyone…
Alesha,
I would much rather get $1200 again instead of the $425 that you mentioned….
Lets’ make this check big enuff to make a downpayment on a car ,,,,,that WIIL stimulate the suto industry. And God knows they need it!!
Alesha….That is a great plan! You included the armed forces which BTW for those that don’t know got screwed with the last check! If they were over seas fighting for our country they LOST funds. What did that help? I know because my hubby is there right now! We lost about 1/3 of the “stimulus” check….
Even if your plan were to give $425,000 per person BEFORE taxes that would sure mess with the “rich and famous” communities. I personally would be satisfied with even half of the $425,000(before taxes)
You should write this up and submit it to congress…..This is a simple non complex plan, at least when you explained it.
Jona….her plan was for $425,000 (four hundred twenty five thousand) not $425(four hundrend twenty five dollars).
All…
I don’t foresee us getting any rebate or “stimulus” check before the holidays. We would be lucky to get one before the next president takes office. Though it would be really nice and accepted with open pocket books…..
Alesha, I’m sorry but I really think that your idea will only weaken the dollar even more. While it sounds like a great plan, it would cause devastating damage to the housing market. Say there’s a house listed at $250,000. Well now every married couple has $595,000.00. Say two couples want the same house. Now they bid back and forth and the house goes to the highest bidder. Say the house sells for $500,000. Now similar houses in the area change their listing price to match what this one sold for (that is how appraisers give the appraisal, based on what similar houses in the area have sold for). Now all $250,000 houses are suddenly worth $500,000.
If you owned a business, and know that everyone received at least $297,500, would you still keep the same price? I know I sure wouldn’t. No honest American would because everyone out for free money is consumed by greed. Suddenly what costs $5 before now cost $10. Why? Simply because they know we have it. What’s even worse, is this ideal fantasy you seem to be passing around, would only make it worse in the end. Do you think our jobs would pay us more to match the massive weakening of the dollar? I sincerely doubt it. No business, anywhere, would be prepared to raise a minimum-wage workers hourly rate to adjust to the problem this would create. In fact, and I assure you this is a gross understatement, several hundred thousand jobs would be lost as soon as the money is gone.
If you want a real solution, what I feel congress should have done IN THE FIRST PLACE – give Americans the opportunity to save themselves. I feel if it were not for all the credit cards out there, people would be able to afford the houses they’ve bought. For those STILL unable to hold their heads above water, perhaps a more detailed plan would be appropriate.
A plan in which congress would alleviate all credit card debt up to 25% of what each household makes in a year, but not to exceed $20,000 per household. The account with the highest interest rate would come first, working it’s way down to eventually being debt free. The people who have proven themselves incapable of properly managing credit cards should be denied any credit card for a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 10 (based on the severity of each households circumstances) This limit should not restrict ones ability to receive a loan for a car, or a home equity loan, but should restrict the amount they can borrow so that their debt to income ratio does not exceed 18%. Not everyone needs a Porsche.
Foreclosures should be suspended for 6 months for those who qualify for the program. If after six months said household could continue to hold it’s head above water, and made it’s monthly mortgage payment on time during the six-month period, delinquencies regarding home payments should be removed from their credit reports. “Limiters” should be placed on their reports to restrict them from attaining any more credit cards, and their credit limits should be reduced by a minimum of 50% and a maximum of 85%. This “limiter” should also prevent them from taking out an auto loan that would raise their debt-to-income ratio above 25%.
For those not responsible enough to hold their heads above water, assistance should be provided in the form of lowering the interest rate, extending the length of the home loan, or helping them sell their home and moving to one they can actually afford. Not everyone needs a million-dollar home, but we all deserve a place to call our home.
For those who have been responsible and are not in danger of losing their home, and are able to make all their payments on time, should be rewarded with an economic stimulus payment. If congress wants the money to be put back into the economy, give it to people who spend it responsibly. They will know what to do with it.
I heard that there was going to be a second stimulus check and also that they was going to double the amount. Now I’m only 19 and i might not get one but I don’t think that it’s a good idea to give out another check. Because it’s like people relying on the extra money that bush is giving out so they don’t have to do much. I mean some people might need it but think about if they give out this second stimulus check people are always going to have their hand out waiting for the 3rd and 4th and so on. What they really need to do is find another way to bring the economy back up cause a stimulus check just shows how greedy some of us are.
And you just proved your age! Those of us who have already slimmed down the budget as much as we can and who have worked overtime only have been hurt by trying to better the siuation. We now pay more out in child care, loose the medicaid benifits that provided health care to our children, now paying for health insurance, and are spending more at the gas pump, grocery line, utility bills, and are stuck! At 19 my dear, do you know what it’s like to juggle utilities, rent/mortgage, groceries, car payment, car insurance, health insurance, having to decide whether or not to keep your life insurance because it’s technically not a nessecity, clothes/shoes/outterwear for your children let alone yourself, school supplies, and everything else that comes up like fixing your vehechle? No, you probably don’t. I hope for you that at 19 you don;t know the hardships that most of America is facing. I think that at some point the government needs to take responsibility for the economic state of our country. I don’t care if they give a second round of checks or put a freeze and heating costs, gas prices, and groceries… what ever will help the economy . I have seen large corperations and small business owners loose it all in the past year… I am mostly scared for my children’s future and if a second stimulus check is going to boost the economy then I say bring it… and for those you who say they don’t want or need it then give it to a local charity or food bank. Speaking of food banks… if you know what one is… they are turning people away because they are out of food to give… which by the way, USDA provides a certain amount of food to those food banks, yet the shelves are still empty.
I think that it would make more since right now than the first one. The first one was given out right at when taxes were due, so if you didn’t make taxes you might have use’d it to pay them, they actually didn’t pay alot of people a stimulus if they owed taxes, which they said they would not due, so alot of people who could have used it didn’t get it. My parents and my brother both make less than me, barely surviving each month, and they got three hundred a peice, my brother barely makes enough for his bills, and he lives at home, and he had to pay taxes last year, I am now twenty one, I have owen’d my own house for about a year, I make more money than they do, and got money back in taxes, as well as the stimulus, I think that that is wrong. I am glad that Obama got in, cause they should tax people who make more, and give to the ones who don’t. I am twenty one years old, and I help out my family as much as I can, cause they need help more than me, I think that the tax breaks should be for the ones who need it, not the big company’s. And I think that if they give a stimulus check to the people at the right time, which is before christmas, that they would be more likely to use it to help the economy, cause they would by christmas, and food for for christmas and thanksgiving, so you’d be help’n family’s as well as the economy. Gas Prices are up, and thier profits are too, if you give them a tax break, they aren’t gonna lower it, cause we need it. Grocery stores aren’t hurt’n, cause I work at a distributing warehouse, all the numbers are up, I look’d at numbers, and Krogers is the leading grocery store for the US, and WalMart is the leading store for the World, there profits are in the billions, Tax breaks will help cause thier numbers may be going down, but our people are the ones who are losing our jobs, when thier top guys are get’n millions dollar bonus’s, and new cars. If they want to save money than they can hold off on thier bonus’s, and company cars, and lower prices so people can afford it, it’s all going up, so they can still get thier money and cars. People who scrape by for a living are the ones who need the money to survive. I could care either way though, I manage my money the best I can. I help out people who aren’t as lucky as I am. And I try to help out place who have help’d me out, when I was younger, and had to work to help put food on the table. I have work’d all my live and have went without food, and heat, I know how it is, and many family’s are going through this, I hope our new president can deliver, cause we do need change, and I know for many family’s the first stimulus check help’d out alot. And a second would too, not all people are gready, but are borderline needy. And a life like that has got’n me where I am today, by hard work, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, so something has to change, and I think another stimulus would help our people and economy, I am still not banking on it, if it comes I will use it wisely, and if it don’t, it won’t hurt me any.
Yes I could definately use a second stimulus check. I am a sigle mom of four whom can only work minimum hours to not lose my kids meicaid. Two of my children have health issues that are pretty expensive not including the other two children’s normal doctor bills, plus two in glasses and me now too. So i could use it or my kids will not see christmas this year and no i am not lazy i enjoy working but know that i can not make enough to pay everything plus daycare. My kids don’t starve but they also don’t get everything they need and the government don’t help cause i get child support, a whooping $175 a month for only one of my kids. My ex husband doesn’t pay anything so i wish they would send another check, plus help with child care and such.
WELL I THINK A SECOND STIMULUS CHECK A DO US SOME GOOD FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
FOR ONE FACT WAL-MART DONT HAVE LAY-A-WAY NO MORE. SO THAT PUT A WHOLE ON CHRISTMAS A LIL BIT. AND EXTRA MONEY FOR THE HOLIDAYS A DO US AGAIN THATS MY OPINION!!!!
I read an article from CNN Money. http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/31/news/economy/stimulus_checks/index.htm
Evidently The papers were signed on Oct. 31, 2008 for a second Stimulus check to be sent out. However that is the only thing that I can find on it. Even the IRS website has nothing mentioned. It would be nice to receive them before Christmas. The checks are suppose to be the exact amount as the first check.
BTW I liked the idea of bailing out the public rather than the corporations. With 4 million people loosing their homes this year I really thing that the 700 billion dollars would have paid a lot of mortgage payments for these families and kept them from loosing their homes. They could have stepped in and actually paid 6 months payments on every single mortgage and killed two birds with one stone. the people would have not lost homes and the banks would have their money, but this would have been too easy.
I guess the American public needs to become lobbists in Washington. Maybe then we will be heard.
The purposed bailout for the Big 3 Auto makers is just as bad. These idiots were producing Hummers At 50,000 while Toyota was selling 4 cylinder cars for 15,000. So to get a big picture here these foreign car makers has flat out stolen our auto market because they had fore site enough to produce economical cars for reasonable prices. Part of this is that they do not have Union Workers who already make 80.00 per hour in wages and benefits going on strike every year to get even more money. American people would rather buy an American car but if they can save on gas consumption, sticker price, monthly payments, etc. then they will buy Japanese.
If the gov. is to bail out these Auto Companies then put mandates on them. Force them to produce alternate fuel vehicles that do not look like some kind of space ship with a price tag under 20,000. I am sorry but all of these hybrid vehicles are ugly! Why can they not make a hybrid Camaro or Charger? Granted some of us still like the power of a big block V8 but the company could still offer the same car with different fuel choices. Give the price incentive to the alternate fuel option.
Sheila
Sheila,
Unfortunately, this article refers to additional checks mailed out as part of the first stimulus package, not new checks for a new stimulus package. As of today, there are still no concrete plans for a second stimulus check.
So a friend and I have been dicussing this situation in our economy and how a second check would really help.
Now something to think about… Sheila said something about the American public should be the lobbists… Ummm the American public are the ones lobbying, and in our house of rep, and senate, even in your local sectors… There are all the American Public! Everytime we go to the poll and vote someone in we are supposed to be voting for the ones that we think are in touch not just with politics, finance, and government issues but with us as the citizens.
If the American public relies on Washington to save us forget it! We need to be contacting OUR reps and senate and who ever will listen and tell them our stories and how we voted them in to REPRESENT US and that we expect nothing less. Tell them you need their push in Washington to see to it that “We the People” get some help! BTW- most people who really need the help don’t have to worry about losing their home to an unpaid mortgage- we don’t own our house. We rent it!
Cindy, you really should get on top of your ex-husband for child support. Take him to court repeatedly and study up on your local laws. I am not downing you or anything. I came from a home with the same situation. My sperm-donor dad (so I call him) paid a measely $69.00 a month for three kids. With all of the back pay he owes, I am the youngest, almost 25 and he is still paying on my 31 year old sister. My mother worked 3 jobs(hardee’s, kmart and a chicken processing plant) at one time 7 days a week, was a single mom of 4(one of which she received nothing for), and was in college (at the time I was 4). No help from anyone. With no help to pay for college either. No gov’t funds at all. We live in the poorest part of NC at that. I shared a bedroom with my mom and 3 of my siblings. Bunk beds and a double. Other sibling on the couch. Guess what she graduated with 2 degrees and is still working her way to the top. She made it. Like LS up there said, it takes hard work for some people. Not everyone has everything handed to them. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. Part of the problem with America is that we are spoiled. We can’t just sit around and hope that we will get free money. Yes, medicare, medicade, food stamps, etc. are wonderful programs. However, they do not need to be abused by people who are perfectly capable of working. (Not pointing you out, just saying) I understand you have sick children, but you have to survive. Please do not get discouraged and lose the opportunity to make a difference in your life and the lives of your children. You have to teach your children how to be strong by leading with your example. I do not know your situation and I am not saying you are abusing anything. I am a bill collector for a financial institution that is surviving the recession we are in now. My income depends on helping others on a daily basis, not harassing them. I do all that I can to help. I hear all of the stories (and it is quite depressing seeing some people are threatening suicide as a fix for the financial bind they are in), but I also live a story. Everything is not easy for me either. I have bills a family, need gas to drive 30 minutes one way twice a day, for my car pmt, utilities. You could check out at home jobs (not licking envelopes!) Check with your local ESC. There are collections jobs you can do from home, among other types, if you have a landline and internet. Some companies are moving in that direction rather than outsourcing, because of the effect on the economy. You can do that from the comfort of your own home and care for your children at the same time. They are often more flexible with your hours too! Another thing, you should also check with your local social services office about childcare assistance. Many states do provide assistance pay if you work X amount of hours. Many people get a relative to sit the children and actually get part of the money back. There are also community service organizations that could help. If you have bills that you need to consolidate you could call The National Foundation for Credit Counseling. They help you find a scam-free LOCAL financial counselor.
Just my little piece of the pie! The check would be great though! =) if I get it I do, if I don’t, peanut butter and jelly sanwiches at work for lunch! No change!
WELL YES I HEARD WE WAS HETTING ANOTHER ONE, BUT WHEN SEEMS TO ME LIKE NEVER, WHATS THE HOLD UP!!! THIS CRAP IS RIDICOLOUS!!! GETTING OUR HOPES UP THATS JUST PLAN MEAN BUT WE STILL WAITING ON WHEN!!
ShahraniH, you are way out of line. Karen stated it correctly. How dare you judge someone whom you do not even know. There are many ways to access the internet without paying for it. Those of you who do not know what it is to struggle think the first stimulus was a waste and are against a second. At my house a second stimulus check would be a gift from Heaven. It would mean we could catch up on some bills and maybe not be the next family on the forclosure list. My children are grown, but we are still struggling. My oldest and his family had to move back in with us because he could not find work. The work he has finally found only gives him 30 hrs. per week at minimum wage. How’s that supposed to support a family?? My husband and I both lost our jobs this summer due to our places of work going out of business. We live in Ohio, where as you know we have the second highest unemployment rate. There are no jobs around here, but this is where our home is so we continue to struggle. I bet you will have a nice Christmas this year. Lucky for you. Our’s will be next to nothing under the tree or on the table. The few gifts under the tree will be for the grandkids and only because I bought a few things earlier in the year and set them aside for Christmas. I know Christmas is about the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but it also feels good to be able to buy a few gifts for those we love. ShahraniH, I wish you a Blessed Christmas, but I hope you learn to think twice before talking/writing. God Bless,..struggling in Ohio.
how do you file for the second stimulus check?
I think it is a good Idea for a second stimulus check. For us that work our buts off to feed our families. I have been layed off from both jobs that I worked and now my husband is the sole bread winner while I search for a new job and have had no bites. Now our land loard is breathing down our necks we are barly making it we have borrowed from paul to pay sally. I’m done I worked for that money and I want it.Besides if it comes before christmas I can tell you there will be people spending left and right for gifts that they probably would not of if they didn’t have it. Me it will go strait to bills rent then to gifts if htere is any left.
My family could really use a second check. Im a single mom living paycheck to paycheck with no assistance at all from our lovley government and no child support, like so many of you out there. Is it really going to hurt our government to give us another check? Christmas is less than a month away, of course the majority of the money would go to the economy. And to those of you that say that you don’t think a second check is a good idea, if the government does decide to send the checks, I will give you my address so you can send me yours.
where did the rumor come from that checks would be sent out again?
WHEN IS THE CHECK ARE GOING TO COME?
Latoya, I think the original rumor came from a little politicking and a lot of wishful thinking. There has never been a serious plan introduced to provide a second stimulus check for taxpayers in 2008.
Kay, If there is a second check (and I would NOT bet on it), we won’t see anything until well into 2009.
are we getting a second stimulus before xmas
are getting a 2nd stimulus before xmas
Esther – No, there will not be a second stimulus check before Christmas.
I know I could use a second stimulus check if my word has anything to do with it. People were able to buy things which otherwise may not of been able to splurge for. Just think….if people think it did nothing for the economy, how would the economy have been without those checks? Prolly worse!! Alot of people (like me and my family) could use them and christmas it would have been wounderful!! Granted I have some presents for our children, we are going to spend Christmas with our family empty handed and just barly getting there because I have been looking for work since the end of September. I start college next month in the Nursing field to hopefully be able to keep a job making descent money. But, getting there is the hard part because nobody wants to help you out! I appreciate greatly the help I do get when I get it! Also it gives me a chance to put a smile on our childrens faces to cheer them up with a special outing or present because we had that little bit more to spend! It gets very depressing being broke on a constant basis especially if u have the ambition to go forward but NOTHING AND NOBODY will give you the opportunity or sources to do so. Every little bit counts and is rewarding to alot of us. Granted some may abuse it or whatever but alot benefit from it and appreciate it.
Hoping the second will come!! Could use it to better my family and my career!!
I’m a disabled mother of four and the first stimulus check came just in time to help us pay bills we were over-due on and I agree that it probably didn’t stimulate the economy as hoped because most people, like myself, are living check to check and needed that money to live, not to
“stimulate” the economy by buying things to keep stores out of bankruptcy when we are fighting to stay out ourselves. As generous and kind as it was to offer the much needed help if a second stimulus check wasn’t a done deal it should have never hit the air waves.Too many people I know were praying ang hoping it was true and promised in time for Christmas was just cruelty added to injury.Being disabled I already live off the government and I appreciate every cent I get and it is used to it’s fullest, but I think we all have to face the facts that D.C. cannot bail out big business, airlines, the stock market and hand every taxpayer a second freebie……unless we want our national deficet to be so out of control the country goes bankrupt as a whole.Generations before us have dealt with recessions, depressions and natural disasters without stimulus checks and we have to deal with our increasing financial downfall as best as we can, just as those before us did.
Here we go again. It was like this around the same time last year in 2008.Hearing about the stimulus check thingy.Well i say this IF WE GET a second stimulus Great if not Oh Well. It’s all to confusing.Remember the way people responded angry at the IRS with all the calling and trying to find out how much and when. Then we that happened people that found out later had not too many problems as to the ones (like me that told my tax preparer about it did not even know what to do).So even so i had to file again and still wait weeks to get it in the mail WOW!!Then the people got messed over when they had direct deposit and it was said to be in their banks on a ceratin date and were not WOW!!To me I think the MEDIA needs to get the facts straight before telling the people about MONEY because as we know it we all need it.But look what people are doing to get it.MAYHEM???So people before you go to file your TAXES watch the news if you don’t hear nothing about it still ask question’s so you don’t have to get all hyped up about this thing again.I know I won’t this time around:-|
