I think a lot of folks make a lot of assumptions about me based on my current demographic. But what you may not know about me is that I’m originally a country girl from the South. My first real album was Randy Travis, my first real concert was George Jones and my dog was named after Lyle Lovett (all true). I have a pretty wide appreciation for music but my heart is still country.
I’ve been surprised not to hear more country songs written about the economy – at the least, Alan Jackson is usually good for writing about current events. That’s why I thought John Rich’s performance last night on the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards warranted a mention on this soggy Philadelphia morning. The name of the song is “Shutting Detroit Down” and it’s a song about the state of the economy and how folks are tired of taking the hit for the failures on Wall Street. Even if you don’t agree with his politics (and often, I don’t), the song is quite heartfelt. The actual performance from last night wasn’t available but here’s the tune just a week after he wrote it.
Enjoy.
Oh yeah, I remember hearing the studio version of this song on radio and thinking to myself “wow, that’s a very current song”. Hm, the guy is pretty good singing live!
