A ‘Tweet’ Tax Break for Valentine’s Day?

Okay, I’m all about Twitter. But you probably knew that already… And if you didn’t, you can follow me @taxgirl on Twitter.

But how much does San Francisco love Twitter?

It seems that the super trendy, quickly expanding social media site is thinking about leaving the city by the bay to move to San Bruno. Why? It’s cheaper. And despite the cutesy little bird logo and easy going founders, Twitter is still a business (though exactly how it plans to make money is something of a mystery).

That’s why some in San Francisco are encouraging the city to approve a tax break for Twitter, to keep the company from moving. The plan is to offer Twitter a six-year payroll tax exemption for new employees if – and only if – they agree to relocate to, um, the wrong side of the tracks.

The Twitter tax break has a thumbs up from Mayor Ed Lee and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu. Twitter, for its part, hasn’t chimed in as to whether it would accept such a deal.

Of course, this isn’t all about Twitter: San Francisco would offer the same deal to Facebook or your company… The plan is to try and promote businesses in an underutilized part of town. A trendy new addition to the strip might be something to, um, tweet about.
