IRS Responds To Criticisms Of Preparer Notices

Kelly Phillips ErbNovember 22, 2011

Well that was quick.

Days after the IRS sent out copies of the Notice 4809 to 21,000(ish) tax preparers, complaints were already flying. One tax preparer crafted this response to IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman while others took to Twitter and other Social Media sites to complain.

It appears that the IRS was listening. This week, on the official Facebook page for the IRS Return Preparer Office, the IRS posted the following message:

We have received numerous inquiries and feedback about the recent Letters 4809 we sent to some preparers. The intent of the letter was to notify certain preparers that some clients’ returns contained entries far beyond average ranges. We are reviewing the feedback we have received and will followup with additional communications soon.

So there you have it.

Thanks to all of you who have chimed in and shared your stories with me. Keep watching this space for updates.
