12 Days Of Charitable Giving (2015): The Jahri Evans Foundation

Kelly Phillips ErbDecember 30, 2015January 14, 2022

It’s the eleventh day of my 12 Days of Charitable Giving. Readers have suggested deserving charities over the past few weeks and I’ll be posting one a day for – well, 12 days (I’m clever that way). Today’s charity is The Jahri Evans Foundation.

The Jahri Evans Foundation helps student-athletes further their education and athletic career by improving and developing their athletic capabilities. Funds raised at foundation events are applied to student-athletes who meet the scholarship criteria and are entering their 1st year of college.

Jahri Evans is an American football offensive guard with the New Orleans Saints. Evans played college football at the Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania but did not play football before high school: he attended Bloomsburg on an academic scholarship. Nevertheless, Evans became one of the NFL’s top right guards, helping lead the Saints to a Super Bowl championship in 2010. He was named to the 2010 Pro Bowl NFC roster, being only the fourth guard to make the Pro Bowl in the Saints’ 43-year franchise history.

The Jahri Evans Foundation offers scholarships to graduating high school in good academic standing with a grade point average of at least a 3.0. Criteria used to select recipients includes an analysis of academic performance in high school together with financial need. For more on how to apply for a scholarship, click here.

So how can you help?

To make a one-time donation via credit card, you can click over to the website. You can also opt to donate on a recurring basis.

As always, you want to make sure that your donation is going to a qualified charitable organization. A search using the IRS’ Exempt Organizations Select Check reveals that The Jahri Evans Foundation is on the list. And this is one of those situations where you shouldn’t let the name fool you: although the organization has the word “foundation” in the title, it’s a public charity. In general, a taxpayer can deduct contributions to a public charity of up to 50% of his or her adjusted gross income (AGI) while a taxpayer can only deduct contributions to a private foundation of up to 30% of his or her AGI.

To find out more about The Jahri Evans Foundation, check out their website or like them on Facebook. You can also follow them on Instagram or Tumblr.

Remember: submissions to the 12 Days of Charitable Giving are made by readers and in most cases, I can’t personally vouch for the good work that these folks do. So be generous. But be smart. Do your homework.
