Update: Trump Tax Petition Hits Three-Quarter Million Mark, Still Climbing

Kelly Phillips ErbFebruary 14, 2017

In January, I wrote a story about a petition posted to the White House’s “We the People” petition website calling for the release of President Trump’s tax returns. The petition, which was created on January 20, asks the White House to “[i]mmediately release Donald Trump’s full tax returns.”
The full text reads:

WE THE PEOPLE ASK THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO TELL US WHAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS DOING ABOUT AN ISSUE:
Immediately release Donald Trump’s full tax returns, with all information needed to verify emoluments clause compliance.
The unprecedented economic conflicts of this administration need to be visible to the American people, including any pertinent documentation which can reveal the foreign influences and financial interests which may put Donald Trump in conflict with the emoluments clause of the Constitution.

Since I posted the story, I’ve received a number of emails, tweets and messages advising me that the petition did not appear to be updating. Specifically, on February 3, I received a flurry of notices that the “number is stuck at 476,329.” I clicked over to the petition and sure enough, for a few days, the number didn’t move despite reports that some taxpayers attempted to sign the petition.

The petition, available here, appears to be functioning again: as of this morning, it has 762,730 signatures. Petitions that receive 100,000 signatures within 30 days are reviewed by the White House for a response. The 30-day window ends on February 19, 2017.
The White House has not indicated whether it will formally respond to the petition and it has not responded to my requests for more information. However, as I noted before, in a January 22 segment for ABC’s “This Week,” Kellyanne Conway made it clear that the returns would not be released. “The White House response is that he’s not going to release his tax returns,” she said, adding, “We litigated this all through the election.”
