Ask The Taxgirl: Extending/Amending Returns & Rebates

Kelly Phillips ErbApril 29, 2008December 4, 2019

Taxpayer asks:
Hello,

I have a daughter born 3/3/06. There has been a delay in her birth cert. due to name change which also means I have not been able to acquire a ss# for her.

I am going to do an amendment for the past 2 tax years once I receive the proper documents (birth cert, then ss#). My question is am I able to still receive the $300 on the extra rebate for her? If so what is my time frame?

Thank you,

Taxgirl says:

Your dependent must have a valid Social Security number to be claimed a dependent on your federal income tax return, rebate or no rebate. So clearly, you haven’t been able to claim your daughter thus far. For more information about taxpayers who are ineligible for a rebate, see my prior post.

While you can amend your tax returns, your options for amending (or extending) and qualifying for the rebate are limited. To date, the IRS has imposed deadlines for extensions and qualifying for rebates – for the most part, you must file by the end of the year. See my prior post for more information about extensions.
