IRS Admits “Human Error” In Processing Tax Rebates: Child Credit Omitted

Kelly Phillips ErbMay 15, 2008

So, it turns out that I was wrong.

But the IRS was more wrong.

Way wrong.

It turns out that up to 350,000 households did not receive the $300 per child owed them as part of their economic stimulus rebate payments. The IRS blames “human error” and “computer glitches.” According to the IRS, taxpayers are to blame (!) for not checking a box on paper returns; two computer software systems were also not properly processing the information.

The IRS now believes that it has identified those affected taxpayers and will notify those taxpayers by letter. The checks for the child credit will not, however, be mailed until July.

The IRS has advised that the affected taxpayers do not need to contact the IRS or file additional paperwork. They’ll take care of it. You believe them, right?

It was bound to happen. No one (or agency) can be perfect millions of times. Mistakes are going to happen. But blaming the taxpayers?

Did you check the wrong box, Taxgirl? 😉

I got a direct deposit from the IRS. It took me by surprise, because I didn’t realize they were going to deposit my rebate. Then, a couple of days later I got the letter in the mail. Another example of our efficient IRS.

OH it’s just a small mistake (350,000)! Do you know how many homes with children were counting on that income for some relief from the high prices of everything!! Why do the middle income people always get mugged by everyone, and take it? Be warned these days are coming to an end, if the Gov does not take action crime will be out of control. everyone for themselves is going to get ugly!

Where can I chat with those in my situation re. child support, medical contributions, property disputes, visitation rights. Intrastate issues with California.
