A Note About Facebook

Kelly Phillips ErbJanuary 11, 2010

Earlier today, my Facebook account was hacked. The hackers were sending messages, advising that I was in London, had been robbed at gunpoint and needed my friends to wire me some money. While it’s believable that I might be in London, I can assure you that I would never take to Facebook to beg for money in that circumstance… that’s what cell phones and parents are for.

If you were the victim of one of these hacked messages, I apologize.

If you were one of the folks that called my office out of concern for my safety, I appreciate it.

And if you were one of the hackers, may you spend the rest of your life trapped in a small space, being forced to watch reruns of Caillou and eating day old McRib sandwiches.

The result of all of this is that my Facebook account has been disabled. If you haven’t been able to access my taxgirl feed or taxgirl fan page on Facebook, that’s why. I’ve alerted the powers that be – and now we wait.

My apologies for any inconvenience.

Too bad you weren’t in London but everything else is terrible. I got a peculiar message from a facebook friend that I had to delete from my page.

    What’s with these guys.

Sorry to hear this, but I think many people underestimate how easy it is to break or guess passwords. Especially someone with a popular blog site, you are more likely to be targeted. So far, I’ve never had this happen to me (knock on wood) and I would like to think it’s partially because I use http://passwordmaker.org/ plugin for all my online accounts. If you have some time, it is worth the couple hours of investment to configure for all your online logins. Best of luck.

I received an e-mail like that from a friend’s account. I replied very carefully and received another one. I asked them to give me specifics on our relationship and the e-mails stopped. Knowing the person like I do, they would NEVER ask me for that kind of money because they know that I don’t have it.

Love the choice of punishment. Extraordinarily creative and terrifying.
