Free File Only Available Through IRS

Kelly Phillips ErbApril 15, 2007

The IRS is warning taxpayers to avoid a site claiming to assist taxpayers file for free through the “Free File Alliance.” You can only access Free File through the IRS web site at www.irs.gov.

In the scam, various web sites claim to work with the Free File Alliance, a partnership between 19 tax software companies and the IRS. The Web sites have allegedly accepted tax information from taxpayers, changed the taxpayers’ bank account numbers to their own and then filed the return through a legitimate Free File partner.

Seventy percent of taxpayers are eligible to use the IRS Free File program.  To qualify, your adjusted gross income must be $52,000 or less. If you qualify, visit www.irs.gov and click on the Free File link.
