The IRS has announced that it is accepting applications for the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council (IRSAC). IRSAC is comprised of up to 35 members who are appointed to three year terms by the Commissioner (currently, that’s Doug Shulman). The Council provides a public forum for IRS officials and the public to discuss relevant issues regarding federal tax administration. The IRSAC submits an annual report to the IRS commissioner at a public meeting in the fall.
Applications are currently being accepted for roughly a dozen appointments that will begin in January 2012.
All kinds of folks from all walks of life are eligible for IRSAC, except for federally registered lobbyists. Ideally, nominees will have a strong tax or business background, excellent communications skills, practical tax administration experience and knowledge, and the ability to interact in a diversified environment.
Applicants will be required to submit to practitioner checks; those applicants deemed “best qualified” must also submit to a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) check.
In addition to a resume, an applicant must submit a completed IRSAC Membership application (downloads as a pdf) and a Tax Check Waiver (downloads as a pdf). Applications must be postmarked or faxed on or before June 17, 2011.
