Callers posing as agents from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) attempting to collect bogus tax debts topped the list of the most reported scams of 2016, according to the Better Business Bureau. Those IRS phone scams accounted for 1 in 4 reported scams last year.

Dozens of arrests have been made in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) impersonation phone scams plaguing American taxpayers. Acting on a tip, 70 call center workers were arrested for their alleged roles in tax-related scams following a police raid on call centers outside of Mumbai, India. More than 750 call center workers were detained in what a police spokesperson characterized as an ongoing investigation.
