A Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) audit was conducted after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reported that identity thieves had illegally accessed tax information tied taxpayer accounts. TIGTA found that the IRS did not identify and assist all potentially affected taxpayers about the access or attempted access.
