Snipes: He Is But He Isn’t

Kelly Phillips ErbJanuary 16, 2008

Wesley Snipes cannot, as my mother would say, win for losing.

As one of his many, many claims and motions filed in his tax evasion case, the star of “Blade” had argued that two of his attorneys were unfit for trial.

Now, he wants one of them back.

Daniel Meachum tried to rejoin the Snipes lead team on Monday and Senior Judge Terrell Hodges wasn’t having it.

Meachum has claimed that he withdrew for medical reasons, not because he provided ineffective counsel. But Hodges ruled that if the new motion was true, the earlier motion was fraudulent. He gave Snipes’ legal team two choices: ditch Meachum altogether, or waive the previous claims of ineffective counsel. The latter could be important on appeal.

Despite making numerous statements to the press earlier, Snipes has not spoken about the case since procedural elements for the trial began earlier this week. Testimony in the trial is expected to begin today.
