Ask The Taxgirl: Effect Of Extensions On Rebate Checks

Kelly Phillips ErbFebruary 26, 2008December 4, 2019

Taxpayer asks:

I understand that one must file a tax return in order to get the upcoming tax rebate. What is the effect on the tax rebate of filing an extension and completing the return by the October deadline?

Taxgirl says:

Checks will be mailed beginning in May for taxpayers who timely file their tax returns.

Filing for an extension will delay your rebate check as the IRS will not issue rebate checks for a taxpayer unless and until a 2007 federal income tax return is filed.

*** Addendum: The IRS has indicated that checks will only be mailed out through December 31, 2008. If you file your tax return after the extension deadline, it appears that you may not qualify for a rebate check for 2008 (there is reportedly a worksheet for amendments which will appear on your 2008 return – I am not yet sure what effect this will have on late filers).

Just great……why can’t they make up their minds; stimulus, no stimulus…….
Iheard there was no stimulus this year. All I get is a widow’s pension so I don’t file, and now here it is April 14th , now what.
