And just when we thought the IRS had a handle on things… After admitting that 350,000 taxpayers were underpaid on their tax rebates because of an omission of the child tax credit, the IRS has another mea culpa: they’ve been misdirecting tax rebates to the wrong accounts.
According to an article in Newsday, an IRS representative had indicated that as many as 15,000 rebate checks were misdirected as part of a “computer glitch.” An IRS spokesman would not confirm the number of misdirected checks – or the reason – but did admit that there had been “instances of problems.”
If you see a check in your bank account that doesn’t belong there, don’t spend it. The IRS warns taxpayers that misdirected IRS direct deposits should be reported to the bank and improper paper checks must be mailed back to the IRS.
What’s next, I wonder? And exactly how much is this (repeated) fiasco costing us?
I can’t beleive this. How is it that all these errors are accuring at the right time. This is a very strange thing to happen. But I don’t think people will be honest and turn over money they get just because it could be an error on the irs side.
I am pretty upset myself. I was suppose to get my stimulus check on May 9th in the amount of 1,200. And I have yet to see it!
when i didn’t recieve my tax rebate i called and asked why they told me that my wife’s social security number did not match her name on our 2007 tax return form, l left out her maiden name that is hyphenated i have filed like this for 16 year it has never been a problem but it seem now it is. So they told me that i can not get any of the rebate and it can’t be fixed untill maybe on my 2008 tax return.
We didn’t get pur money either, even though I went and cahncged my name o ss card
IRS sucks if we owe them it doesn’t matter who’s mname is in the card..they will find you !!
what to do to get a tax rebate on wife’s policy if its still on her previos surname ie before marriage?
Manish – if you were entitled to receive a check and didn’t because of a problem with a name, you should contact the IRS. Call: 1-800-829-0582, when asked for an extension enter 726.
To avoid further confusion, you should make sure that any name change is properly recorded with the Social Security Administration.
