Who Else Got A Boost From The Stimulus Package?

Kelly Phillips ErbJuly 8, 2008

I’ve already reported that tax professionals received a benefit from the stimulus package with more taxpayers than ever rushing to file.

Now comes news that another industry has received a boost from the (*cough*) stimulus package: porn.

Adult web sites are experiencing a boost in sales this year, despite a slowdown in the economy. Perhaps not so coincidentally, porn sites note 20-30% growth since rebate checks were sent out. This is significant since summer is a slow time for internet porn (I don’t purport to understand why).

There has to be a joke in there somewhere.

I’m not all that surprised. The sex industry traditionally does well in bad economies. I wonder how the White House feels about this?

“Heh heh … I got your stimulus right here, baby! Maybe you wanna check and make sure it still works?”

That’s hilarious… and kind of sad, too. People get more or less found money and blow it (no pun intended) on porn? To each his own, I guess.

This is NUTS! So since people are stressing about the economy & worried about gas prices, the best place to feel warm inside is PORN?

    Crazy stuff.

I wonder what other industries online are showing some huge boosts in traffic because of the stimulus.

Unfortunately this story (which was taken up uncritically by Henry Blodget among others) has been shown to be nonsense.

The publisher of this ‘survey’ can bring no meaningful data to his press release.

Just goes to show how easily B.S runs on the blogosphere. Perhaps there is a need for ‘old media’ after all.

    Thanks for the links.

To be honest, however, doctorate dissertation or no doctorate dissertation, I didn’t think that the second post had a whole lot to say. It sounds more like the industry is getting slammed for not traditionally keeping great stats and now claiming that they’re getting a boost. The Adult Industry Market Research Company apparently stands by their statements – I’m not sure that “old media” would have reported that differently.
