Taxpayer asks:
I received my stimulis check for me and my husband and 5 children. We had another baby March 24, 2008. Can I get $300 for him as well and how can I get it?
Thank you.
Taxgirl says:
Yes, you can claim your newest dependent on your 2008 tax return (assuming you otherwise qualify) in order to get the extra credit.
There are no additional forms to fill out. You claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your regular tax return. On a federal form 1040, you take the credit on line 70.
Any additional credit due to you will be included in your refund check.
Congrats on the new baby!

I first read this headline as, “Rebate Check for 2008, Baby!” Unfortunately, I looked more closely and found that I was wrong. 😀

Along these same lines – young couple, dependents of their parents last year – this year married – parents got the stimulus payment for the kids last year – this year the kids get it….didn’t give that any thought until it happened…..the other thing about this young couple that entranced me (I’m not sure entranced is the proper word) – she had bright lime green hair and he had ear rings all over his face…..got my attention, anyway…what a strange, strange world we live in…..
I filed 2007 in MFJ ( I have two kids aged 14 and 12 )and not eligible for RRC due phasing out. In 2008 on income basis I am eligible for $1200 of RRC and my kids have ITIN. Turbo tax is showing my RRC is $1200 not $1800. When I checked on IRS website calculator it is showing $1800. Can I apply for SSN for my kids now and file modified return after I got SSNs? Is there any condition that kids should have SSNs on particular date to get children RRC.
