Beanie Sigel has a little excitement planned for Tuesday but it has nothing to do with taxes. Sigel’s new album, Broad Street Empire Vol. 1: Lost Files, is scheduled to drop on Tax Day, April 17, according to Philly’s own DJ Damage.
Coincidence? Maybe. Or perhaps it’s a clever reference to Sigel’s tax troubles.
When DJ Damage tweeted about the album on April 10, Sigel was awaiting sentencing for tax evasion. Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, pleaded guilty in 2011 to failing to file federal income tax returns for 2003, 2004 and 2005. Federal prosecutors, who are seeking the maximum sentence of three years plus restitution, were angry that Sigel had not cooperated with authorities with respect to his finances.
The sentencing hearing didn’t happen as planned on Thursday. Sigel’s attorneys confirmed that the rapper had not provided the financial information a probation officer requested nor had he allowed the probation officer into his home. As a result, the hearing has been pushed off to July 12. That means he has three months to have a little chat with his probation officer about his finances and repayment. Sigel, who claims to be “good with math but I skipped it in school” (from Think It’s a Game), will have a little bit longer to brush up on his numbers.
